I forgot the Norweigians! My mother and aunt would roll over in their graves. :0

Yup, I just checked it out and MagCloud does indeed want a PDF. That means you can use any publishing tool you wish and then generate a PDF from the results. The MagCloud idea is quite interesting. Maybe a different magazine for each line of the family. In my case: Doolittle, Newman, Gladfelter, Gary, Kenyon

When Ancestry.com came out with their online publishing I started using that and was able to get a free copy of what I had put in. I found it too limiting for my creativity. But it did provide some decent templates that it pulled in from you online Family Tree.

GeneJ,
Most publishers will take your submissions in a PDF format. Newspapers take my ads that way, and printer take my brochures that way. A lot of book publisher don't necessarily use InDesign...I've found many who use Quark. If you need any help using InDesign, just let me know.

I would like to provide a substitute for InDesign. When I first started with graphics I found this company from England "Serif". They had DrawPlus that worked very similar to Illustrator. They also had PhotoPlus and MoviePlus. All good software. These will do more than the beginner needs. However they are not as sophisticated as Adobe. They have publisher software called PagePlus. While I haven't used this application from Serif and have been very happy with the ones I've used. And there support was wonderful. You can get PaagePlus for under $100. And it has templates. I always recommend that when you are learning new software, do the tutorials that are provided. You learn a lot that way. Here is the link for PagePlus. http://www.consumersearch.com/desktop-publishing-software/serif-pageplus-x3-publisher-professional

My plan is to build the family sheets and descendant sheet in Family Tree Maker, put them into a PDF. From the PDF I can then put them as pictures in InDesign or Photoshop and then into InDesign. From there I can get rid of the white background and create my own.

InDesign is what I'm also considering to write my family book. To everyone out there who don't know what it is---it is Abode professional publishing software. I use it at work to create brochures, ads, and many other documents. I often use it in conjunction with Photoshop and Illustrator. InDesign is pretty expensive ($699. you can get an Academic version for $199 but you have to prove you are attending a higher education facility) and not the easiest software to use. I have several books on InDesign and don't half of it. If you are expecting templates, you will be disappointed because there are none. I don't want to dissuade anyone here from using it, and will try to help you out if you do decide to use it.

First lesson in writing: Spell the subject right! Maybe it was a joke to see how fast it was caught.

Please don't consider me picky -- I just don't know how to send the message to the proper person. The name of the group is spelled wrong. It should be Writing Genealogy and Family History.
