Hi Jim! I have a copy of my 5th great-grandmother Catherine Stagner's will (16 June 1779, proven 23 May 1791) from York Co, PA. The executor was Christopher Wohlfawrt. One of her daughters was Mary Stagner who was married to Stofel Wohlfaurt. Her granddaughter is listed as Catherine Wohlfaurt. I know that in many cases the Wohlfaurt name changed to Wolhford/Wolford. Are these any relations to you?
Hi Jim,
I do not know of anyone in the Blaney family that lives in Vermont. I appreciate your return of information though. I have learned that there are many Blaney's through out the world....it will be an interesting journey to find out more info..You have a beautiful golden retriever.....Thanks again....Elaine Blaney
My Bartels came in the 1890'2 and 1900's from the Hanover region (Celle) of Germany. They settled in Duquesne PA and Pittsburgh PA. Alwine Bartels Deitrich, Ella, Emma Bartels Schwab, Minna and Wilhelm All were sibs of my great grandfather Daniel who remained in Germany.
Good Morning Jim,
How silly of me....It is easy to get lost in last names...I do not know much about my grandmother yet...All I have is her father and mother's names which werre Althemia Robinson and her father was Wentworth Cosman....I have not started on grandmother yet....I never knew anything about her family....or met them ...my Dad shared this info with me ........Thanks for the correction...Elaine :)
Jim, I have no way of knowing--all I know is that Mary Byrne was my GGGGrandmo, and she presumably came from Borris, Carlow or one of the surrounding parishes. There were a lot of Byrnes in the area, and I have no way of knowing which ones were related. I do know that Mary died before 1846.
Sorry, and good luck with your search. If you come up with any leads for a Byrne related to a Quinn, let me know.
Hi, Not that I know of about the Byrne's in NY but I've only got my late husband's father and grandfather so I'm not very far on but I think they were Irish. Thanks anyway. I don't suppose you know of a William Steward who married someone called Mae and lived in the first place in Mosby, Montana in the early 1900's? I can't seem to find their marriage or death certificates. William and his brother George were born in Hull round about 1892/94. Sorry but i know I'm going off subject. Barbara
Thanks Jim--I was just in Borris and actually walked the old family farm which was quite a treat, so if she has any Quinns in that area, or in Quebec, I would be very anxious to hear from here.
Yes, I did. I'm sorry they didn't get posted on the homepage. I will ask my-coworker when she can get that done. They were posted on the WorldVitalRecords Blog.
Hi Jim,
My father in law, Warren Knapton, grew up on the Colby farm in Henniker, NH with Al Colby and Buelah; she was a telephone operator in Henniker Center. I forwarded this information to Warren so he could add information if you would like.
I don't know. If my Dad or Mom was alive I could ask him. My dad have a sister in Greenville. I will ask her next time I talk to her. My mom also has one siste still living. When I email her; I will ask her.
Hi Jim, Do you have your Allen line done?? Mine came from New York and s my Hector Allen married a Mary Bullet but I don't have any dates for them. A daughter was born in 03 Aug 1885 in No Adams Mass and died in Scarborough, Me.Her name was Florence Mae Allen. She married Arthur G. Harriman ll.Thats about it. Hope you can help.
Hi Jim, thanks for being so prompt. Well at least you have more then I do except my granmother(Florence) was married to Mr. Harriman at the time she gave birth to my father. And it turns out se had a brief affair to a Mr. ? Smith and had my father in New York. But my father didn't know this until he got marrid. I guess thats when she told him because his birth certificate says Harry D. Harriman. Well I'll keep looking nice chatting with you thanks.
At this point I do not have the counties. I know some are from Pa. Frank F. Avery's birthplace so far is unknown to me...he is my g grandfather and moved to Iowa at some time. Avery's had a township in Ia named for them but I have been unable to locate where it was. Read it was near north Ia border, yet near Humboldt, Ia. also. He was related to Avery's in Humboldt.
I hope to participate in the chat on Indian paths in PA. I'm orginally from the Susquehanna and Lehigh valleys. I've just completed a project to map an Indian Bay Path through Sturbridge, MA. My report is available at http://files.healthgisguy.com/BayPath/Bay%20Path%20Final%20Report.pdf.
I just realized I'm going to miss your presentation on Sunday. We'll be vacationing in ME without computer access. Any chance it will be recorded? I'd be interested in hearing if any of the participants are use GIS. Please feel free to refer them to the report I sent you a link to.
GISP stands for Certified Geographic Information Systems Professional. GIS is Geographic Information Systems -- or computer mapping and analysis. GIS is what I used to create the maps in my report.
Hey, nice looking "Golden" in your photo. I'm sure it would get along great with my Golden "Daisy".
Is the Ferguson that you mentioned from western PA, specifically from around Cambria county? My g grandfather is Robert Ferguson and I think that my gg grandfather is John Ferguson but that I still need to document! Thanks
Thanks Jim. I am looking forward to your Indian Path discussion tomorrow, but will not be able to keep up w/the scroll bar. The slide bar sticks or stops working for me as time shortens on discussion I guess. Hope I can see your transcript. Researching Hardman/Hartman variants PA OH VA WA . Family orig in Harrison & Marion Co's WV came from ??? Close to SW PA border. Can't connect w/estab. lines in Harrison Co. Thanks again. J E Burke
I have a Second Great Grand Aunt Lydia Bates born in 1848 in Paulsboro, NJ (on the Delaware River) who is the daughter of my 3rd GGFather Edward Bates. I don't know her spouse. Would the timeframe match your Lydia?
PS - there is a strong family resemblance between you and some of my Bates ancestry and Uncles! If you are a facebook member, I can link you to our latest family reunion pics!
You have become an interesting person for me to correspond. Years ago my best friend was an Avery. My father's family of West is why you contacted me, but I have learned that you are interested in one of my mother's lines - the Ferguson family.
My West family goes back to Thomas West, Sr. born before 1718 in VA or NC. We can only go back with documentation to one of his sons being born in Granville Co., NC in 1750 according to his pension application, but we pick up land dealings and other records in 1754 onward. The WEST Surname project on FTDNA has about 200 West individuals who have tested, my Group #5 is the largest.
The Ferguson line is at a roadblock where I am confident of the lineage but due to the county records being burned out documentation is missing. I can document back to my first Ferguson: Sarah Francis Ferguson born 1809 in KY married Prosser Cruse living in the Hart Co., KY area. Her father appears to be David Ferguson (b. 1785) and mother Elizabeth Bomar both born in Halifax Co., VA.
Enjoyed Indian presentation. Tried to reply in chat room but I guess I don't know how to post. I don't know how my 1st post got on board. I don't see a submit button. Tried your name in side bar membership. Was going to suggest an explanation of PA. "Dutch" (Deutsch) church that had various names. I believe Mennonite was one of them which we are familiar with in PA. Other names were the Dunkards, Dunkerds, The Brethren, The Dissenting Church of Christ (I think) & others depending on the desires of the individual congregation. I'm sorry I didn't take notes & I may have it a little confused here.
Just minutes before your presentation got call I have a new grand nephew b. Aug 22. Look forward to more PA talks. Haven't been able to find transcripts on SSG site. - Joan E Burke
Jim,
I had to run because I had to surrender my computer to my wife and daughters. I was intrigued by your conversation but I didn't get to finish it.
I'll check out the GenWeb page you discussed.
Thanks and have a great one,
Ken
There are Spanglers in Cleveland and Rutherford Counties of North Carolina but mine are went from Maryland to Ohio to Illinois. After the 1800's west, north, and a few south.

I just read your comments; Guess I should join the PA group. My paternal line goes back to Amish and Mennonite that when they got to Somerset County, joined the Dunkers, then Fraternity of German Baptist, then German Baptist Brethren, now Church of the Brethren. None of mine were part of the Ephrata Cloister, but at least 50 elders in my files,
My mother-in-law has been researching the Naylor side of the family. They immigrated to New York and then to Michigan and from there to Colorado and California. As far as I know there are none from our family in Pennsylvania.
I am researching the Gilger family from Shamokin and surounding area in Northumberland County. I am very interested in learning more about Pennsylvania, the Germans, Pennsylvania Dutch, and life in those times as I have it in my mind to write an historical novel based on the lives of the ancestors I have researched. I just noticed the Pennsylvania Dutch group yesterday and read your post. I'm not sure how to do a chat and I'm on dial-up, so I'm not sure it's possible for me to join in, but I will try.
Also I noticed you have Byrne, Burns as surnames. Have you come across any Burns in Wisconsin/Minnesota? This line from Ireland is fascinating, but I'm not sure yet how I'm connected to it. It's one of my brick walls. : )
Jim, Yes, my G'Ma was born and raised in the town of Loganton, Clinton, County, Penna. Her father's name was Levi Snook. Her mother's name was Harriet Melissa (nee) Berry. The union produced two children, Mary Margaret (my G'Ma) and Anna. Snook is not an uncommon name. Neither is Berry. The info about these families is available at the LDS website. -Ted
Jim, I found much of the info that you replied with. Found on a couple of internet sites containing family genealogy. But, alas, I am not convinced that we are talking about the same Levi W. Snook. Yours appears to have been born in 1827. While the ONLY info I have for mine is the 1880 US Census where his age is listed as 29 which would make his birth year 1851. Am I missing something?
Jim, I am really new to these discussion groups, etc. I looked at the Avery surname group and got a message that it doesn't exist, so how do I get into the Avery discussion group? We have a cousin who has done extensive work on our Avery line and if I can share that with anyone, I'd be happy to.
Jim, I just looked at our Avery/Schuck book. Looks like we go back to a Mark Avery born 25 Nov 1820, but we don't know where. He married Helen Colborn in Wisconsin. If anyone goes back to this line, they can let me know.
Jim, Thanks for the inputs. I can not verify very much of what you wrote. All on-line US Census data paths (except 1880) appear to go through Ancestry.com. No, I am not a member of Ancestry.com. Not yet, anyway. And, again, the 1880 census record and an obituary are all that I have about MY Levi W. Snook. I do not have the names of his parents. I do not have the names of siblings (other than Elias) The family lore had him moving to Johnsonburg, Elk County, PA, to "help" build a paper mill (it's still there, making magazine and computer paper) in the 1890's. He was married to Harriet Melissa (Berry) at the time. She refused to move with him, they got into a quarrel that ended in divorce. Harriet remarried James Pierce. The family lore of Levi got vague. No one seems to know for sure what happened to him after he left Johnsonburg. They "thought" that he may have gone to live near his older brother, Elias, in Franklin, Venango County, where he "may" have died. There was never a suggestion that he "may" have remarried and moved to California. That's a twist. Although not unlikely. A twist of fate, Harriet died while visiting her daughter, Mary M. (my G'Ma) in Johnsonburg and is now buried there, along with J. Pierce. That, after her very determined obstinance to moving there with Levi. Too, I have the newspaper obituary notice of Elias' death but not Levi's. Again, thanks for the info.
Hi Jim, Thanks for the ancestry.com offer. I have used familysearch.com quite extensively. We are headed out of town, to NW Pennsylvania (Elk County) for a couple weeks starting tomorrow. Only communication is via cell phone so this discussion will have to be suspended for awhile. I am certainly interested in continuing Snook research and your inputs. Thanks again. -Ted
Hi Jim....Let me know the details of the Steinmetz's you are looking for and I'll see if I can help. Please note that I am recently digging up my genealogy work after a bit of a break so my memory is fuzzy! I'm getting back into the swing of it though so would love to see if we can help each other with Steinmetz info! Thanks!
