Hi, My Walkers were originally enslaved under the Simkins in Edgefield, and ended up on James Edward Calhoun's Millwood Plantation in what is now Calhoun Falls, Abbeville Co. when he married Maria Simkins in 1839. I haven't figured out why they adamantly chose the Walker surname. (Calhoun left land in his 1889 will to his "faithful servant" Caroline Calhoun, but she always called herself Caroline Walker.) Do you know of any connections between Walkers and Simkins in Edgefield?
My gggg grandfathers name was Joseph Walker. His wifes name was Elizabeth(Clark)Walker b.1738 in Edgefield district So. Carolina. There is a John(jack) Walkerbut he was born in 1816 in Irwin county Ga. Probably not much help.
My 4th great grandfather from edgefield, SC William S Thornton married Elizabeth Walker Thornton. This is documented in the book --The hard labor section. Eli S. Thornton, Sr., was most probable Eli's son. I worked with Kenneth Jacob Thornton and found a history and lineages of our line. If anyone else is connected to this line OR Daniel Thornton please contact me at: ad_guy_98@yahoo.com or 415-279-4818.
