Thanks for your replies -if you can find more info about the approx date both your Smith and Turner families left Ireland I might be able to find out more for you. Did your grandparents marry in the US or in Ireland - if it is Ireland I might be able to find their marriage details for you.

It is unfortunate that Smith is such a common surname isn't it? A lot of the Irish who live in Ulster were orginally from Scotland - they were protestants who were given land. There is a Smith tartan and some more info here - www.clansmithsociety.org.
Cavan is in the Irish republic and borders onto Ulster.
Have you any information about when your family left Ireland - was it during the 1840's potato famine?
