Manumission "Freedom Paper" for Lewis Adams, a maternal great-great-great grandfather of Art Thomas. Paper dated 15 Mar 1813 when Lewis is to be freed and reflects future "freedom" dates for his children. Milly, Harriet & Simon. At the time of this paper the State of KY required the emancipator, in this case William Adams, to have two (2) other free whites sign for the emancipation of any slave(s). William Adams chose his daughter Catherine (Adams) Hite and his son-in-law John HIte for his co-signers. The name of the mother of Lewis' children is unknown. Harriett is the only child known to have received her freedom and she is found as the wife of John Miles, with her family, residing in the household next to Lewis Adams in the 1850 Census records for Concord Twp., Champaign Co., OH.
