This carte de visite (made from an original glass plate) is of my g-g-grandfather Allen Bates, age 19, at Gallop's Island, Massachusetts, which was a Union fortress, at the time (1864) where Union troops were trained. Allen was assigned to the 1st Massschusetts Heavy Artillery.
