Chris Hoell was born in Germany in 1846 and married Wilhelmine Dietermann in 1868. Christ was a fire fighter in Elberfeld Germany for 7 years. While serving as a fire fighter, he learned the pompier method of fire fighting in tall buildings. He introduced this Hook and Ladder technique to St. Louis after the fire at the Brooklyn Theater and Southern Hotel.
