Start by writing down everything you know--parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. Then, start bugging your relatives for what they know.
Then, you're reading to start exploring the census. I did it on ancestry, which a lot of libraries have for free. Others do it on family search, I think.
Next time you're on, come on into the chat room. There are a lot of people there who would be happy to give you the benefits of their experience.
