Hello,
I'm new to the site and would like to ask advice of all those who can answer the following question. Is the latest Family Tree Maker Program, 2014???, worth upgrading my system to. I currently have an older version, 5.0, which has been upgraded to 10.0. I have a lap top computer with windows 7. The older program works ok, but, I always get the message, "done with problems" or "errors on page" at the bottom left of the screen. I have more than 11,000 names in the program with…

Glen,
Personally, I like version FTM 2011 much better than the new version 2014. If you want to upgrade, it will cost you. I had upgraded to version from 2011 to 2012 sometime ago and I hated the synch feature so much as it completely messed up my trees on Ancestry.com; especially my sources which are the backbones of good genealogy. It has taken me years to correct the mistakes and I still find some. I also have Windows 7 and I'm hanging onto it as long as I can, in fact, I have made sure a have a copy of the OS on an external drive, in case my computer were to die. I also have a laptop with Win 7 but it is a newer version.
As a professional genealogist, I expected more from genealogy software that FTM 2014 provides, so I am a big fan of Legacy 8.0. If you have that much media (pictures) in your database, you will find that some of the data you enter on Ancestry.com will not be copied into FTM. For example: No dates or descriptions unlike the FTM version 2011. Also, some information I put into my citations and sources are not copied into the software either.
Since you asked, I would investigate other genealogy software should that version no longer works for you. If you can spare the cash, then try out FTM 2014 version but just be sure to uncheck the box for synching your tree to Ancestry when downloading your tree/s. Be forewarned. Legacy 8.0 has a free version for you to try out but it is not for the faint of heart. It takes a bit of a learning curve to learn but far surpasses FTM 2014. They do provide online webinars and some free learning videos for you to take advantage of. However, if you are just a beginner, you'll find FTM 2014 is user-friendly but be sure to compress your file as soon as you are done with it. Some other members may have other suggestions or comments to add here.
BTW, welcome to GW!
