Hello Jessica, I finally found a lead on a John Pigg who sold land in 1850-51, Alabama, and he might be my man!
Huntsville, Madison, Alabama, USA
160 acres. Military script warrant. John Pigg, Pvt., Capt . Rofs (Ross' ?), 4th Regiment Illinois Volunteers. Land assigned to Thomas Adams Sansford. note: Mexican -American War? It does not say.
(forgive me for using copy and paste)
John Pigg's mother was a resident of Illinois in the 1840's, where John may have volunteered as a soldier. His mother remarried about this time. John Pigg's 1850 census in Hardin Co., TN says his 2 young daughters were born in Alabama. In 1860, he was in Pemiscot Co., Missouri, in 1865 married again to Malinda Ward of New Madrid, Missouri, and in 1870, in Greene Co., Indiana, next to Robert Pigg, his brother, where he seems to have died.
I do not know why he assigned his military script land to Sansford, whether for money or from a relationship. That surname rang a bell. Directly behind my grandfather's grave in Kansas is a tombstone that says Sandford. It is in a photo I took of the grave. John Pigg was my grandfather's grandfather. So far I have found no relationship to Sansford/Sandford.
I have found no relationship of this John Pigg to the other Pigg in Alabama, but maybe there is one? .
I have found nothing on Pigg in Alabama. I did find the name Serena (with different spellings) showing up a generation or so earlier in the Womack family, which my Pigg family is related to. My family seemed to have been in White and Warren Counties in Tennessee. I think there was a Womack in Lauderdale or adjacent county. I can't find much.
I don't know how well the link works. It is named Pigg Family Tree, but has other surnames as well. I don't know if the information in Tennessee is correct, but I will put it up, with a note. The correct info has documents. I'm still working on this.
The children's names in your family are almost the same as the names I have for the sibling's of my John Pigg. This needs to be explored.
I am putting up a public tree at Ancestry.com, which non-members can access. I will put the link on my homepage.
Please be patient as it takes time to add information, and longer to add documents. My older Pigg information may have errors, but I need to put up something so maybe we can all figure out who belongs to which family.
