hi john, i sent your question on to someone who is a bit better connected than me. he has traced the name back to the thirteenth century in lancashire, though the totality of the family eventually moved to yorkshire. i am from the one or two lightowlers families that came to canada. i know at least one lightowlers was sent to australia, too. as this is the anniversary of the titanic, you might be hearing the name a little more frequently as the highest ranking officer to survive was first mate charles herbert lightowlers
