Just had a power failure will start again.
Your William is clearly one of the Blankney Pepperdines and his reference is 1.4.2.1.3 which means that his father was Richard 1.4.2.1 and his mother Elizabeth (Fields).
If William was off the coast of Africa at the time this could be why he does not appear on the US census 1880 or UK census 1881, I had wondered whether he might have arrived in US via Canada.
Have you any idea of the date of the Africa incident?
You will see that I have no idea when Elizabeth died so the information about a train crash is entirely new to me and once again without a date would be difficult to track down
