I see that you are interested in researching the McMahon surnames and the location of South Dakota as well. My Granmother was a McMahon from South Dakota. Her father and all their relatives settled in the community of Green Isle, Sibley Co. MN in the early 1860's. If you feel there may be a connection, please feel free to contact me.
