The three main archives you will want to visit are:
1. The diocesan archive in Astorga - see information in previous posts - this will likely be your best place to do continuous research. The Catholic Church records are found in this archive and you will want to use them first and foremost.
2. The Juzgado de Paz of Santa Maria de Valverde - civil registration records from 1871 to the present. These include civil records of births, marriages, and deaths for the town.
3. Archivo Historico Provincial de Zamora - This archive would be the last place to look (after the two mentioned above). The most valuable collection in this archive will be the notarial records - a lot tougher to use than parish registers and civil registration, and normally used to supplement or use when parish registers were lost/destroyed.
Santa María de Valverde is located in the diocese of Astorga. According to the diocesan guide the diocesan archive has 'varios' parish registers from the town, but does not elaborate any more than that. I would do more checking, but the website that I'm trying to use is not working right now. Here is some archive information. I recommend contacting them before visiting to ask what records they have and to double check their hours.

do you know the town they are from in Zamora? If you don't, then you will want to get that information first. You will then want to determine if the parish records for that town have been centralized into the diocesan archive or if they have been kept in the parish archive. I can help you determine where the records are...send me the town information if you have it.

Hope this helps,
