Thanks Sherry. And let me clear up something. I, in no way want to imply that all White Ratcliff/Ratliff (we have both spellings from same family) were slave owners. Please understand that I was only attempting to solocit information. Yes, I would like to contribute some information. As a genealogist, I have researched both the black back to slavery and their slave owners back to SC/NC. As I stated, many of the MS slaves took their owners names. There are now many, both African American and White now living in Marion County, MS, where there was a plantation and where I research every year. I'm going to read your group messages and see where and if I can possibly fit my research in and communicate with you and the group. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of the group. Surah
Concerning your comment about the slaves carrying the Ratliff surname...or lack of.. in the Ratliff group. ... as with any group, the info and value is only as good as those who participate. No one has contributed any info concerning Ratliff's of slave heritage. My own Ratliffs were poor so as far as I know there aren't any, however, I have not traced the line all the way back, except a comment from Larry Ratliff, who has written a book (I don't have it) and he is not a group member. Perhaps you could contribute what you know so that others may find it?

Sorry for the delay in response but I wish this site would notify when a response is received. Uriah and Deliah had three children: John, James and Polly. Until last week, we only knew of our GF John.James we know nothing of what happend to him however thru Family Search, I discovered Polly married a BF (Benjamin) Phillips who was either born in Miss or Tenn. I have lost her trail again.. Are you familiar with DiAnne Malone who is researching the LeNoirs and she has a sister, Hope Lenoir. Diane is a teacher in Tenn.
Thanks for responding and sorry it took me so long to answer

I have no knowledge of NC. However, I do know that the slave owner families of my ggrndfather went from NC and TN into Marion Cty, MS. I've not heard the names you mention. I'll be going to Morgantown, the home of Hope Lenoir, who seems to be the family head of my Tom Lenoir in July, 2010.. Maybe I'll know more after my research there. I know for sure they were there in 1837. In the meantime what are the names of your GrGrnd parents children.

Per chance, do you have any LENOIR ties in North Carolina? My GGParents Uriah and Delia LENOIR are my brick walls. Were always told that 8 LENOIR men were brought to Haywood Co NC from Caldwell Co NC. Uriah was owned by Thomas Lenoir, son of Gen WmLenoir.. His parents, I do not know. There are numerous mentions of Uriah in the UNC CH papers but nothing thaT GIVES me a clue as to who his parents are. Sharon Holt wrote in one of her books: Making Freedom Pay" that Uriah's Dad was John but I cannot verify that. I want to know my roots and it is hard to find their origins.
Thanks
