Just got an exciting email from a Sheppard cousin in Ireland!

I just want to let you know that not all the Sheppards emigrated. Many of us remained. In fact, we're having a Sheppard family gathering this weekend in Tipperary, just a few short miles from CastleSheppard. CastleSheppard was the home of William Sheppard, the younger brother of Thomas Sheppard.

This weekend gathering coincides with the 100th anniversary of my great-grandfather James Sheppard. We are all there to unveil a memorial to him. Incidentally, my uncle and father are…

Is Legacy responsible for incorrect data on the Internet?

For years I have been blaming The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose 'Ancestry' family trees are - or were - notoriously difficult to amend, and hence never were.

This year, Millennia Corporation will be celebrating their 29th year in business, and the 17th year since they first released their Legacy Family Tree genealogy software.

Legacy is a feature-rich package that lets you chart family trees, record details about individuals, and otherwise track your family…

Proud of our history

In a message from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the Occasion of Black History Month, he remind us “Black History Month serves a two-fold purpose: to look back on the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians; and to acknowledge that Black history is Canadian history-inextricably linked to every citizen across the land and essential to Canada's future”.

In December 1995, the Canadian House of…

Chronicle of Our Branch of the Family in North America - Part 1

The current availability of online databases and the mass photocopying of searchable historical documents have led to a renewed interest in genealogy, and it is now much easier to fill in the basic outline of our family trees.

Many are quickly fascinated by the process of slowly leapfrogging back one generation at a time to learn the names of the ancestors who are responsible for our existences today, and the continuity with the past that we establish seems to give our lives an…

“The Great Beauty” And The Small Moments In Our Own Lives

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of watching La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty), an epic Italian film in the style of Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, but with more cinematic greatness achieved by the advances in technology since the 1960s as well as a more existential examination of life. It was truly captivating and I am planning on a second viewing next week as the MFAH is bringing it back for an…

William Bostick

Hi Hazel,  I did find the newspaper article regarding Mrs. Susan Bostick and Mrs William Bostick. It is not possible for this William to be the twin brother of Joel but a possible link to consider in our future research.

2014 Memory Jar Project

I have been reading about the concept of “Happiness Jars.” In Elizabeth Gilbert’s blockbuster memoir “Eat, Pray, Love” she started a project where she would write down things that have made her happy each day on little slips of paper and put them in this large glass jar. By doing so every day, eventually her jar would overflow with happiness.

I am proposing something similar but let’s call it a Memory Jar or more aptly, the Memoir Jar. Starting tomorrow, January 1st 2014, make a…

New Year is Here, Are You Ready?

The New Year is here, are you ready?  Have you set at least one goal to accomplish regarding your genealogy?

Goal setting is more important than resolutions.  It gives you purpose and direction. It helps to put you back on track when we fall off.  O we do a lot of that falling off.  At least I do.  When researching and another family name pops up within the confines of the search I am already doing it is hard to not, stop and gather in the data.  Then because you have found…
