Gearharts, Garhearts

Hi everyone,
I am looking for any info about Henry A. Garheart, my great grandfather.
He was born in 1844 in Carroll Co., Md., died 1924 in Baltimore.
I cannot find anything about him before the Civil War, 1850 and 1860
Census readings which might have parents or siblings listed are
Nowhere to be found. Miles and Benjamin Gearhart are possible
Relatives, but nothing again to be found. Has anyone possibly researched any of these names?

Gone But Not Forgotten – A Video Memoir

A couple of months ago, a good friend of mine’s brother passed away unexpectedly. He was in his late 30s and while he did have some medical issues, there was nothing that would have predicted a young and untimely death. Naturally his family was devastated.

A memorial was held and as is typically done, a photo slideshow was hastily put together and shown, along with poems, readings and other memorial elements our culture historically does when memorializing someone.

Not long…

Blogging and It's Challenges

Blogging and It's Challenges

Blogging can bring families together that were not aware the other existed.  Blogging sometimes makes people say please do not write about my family. Please, yes respect their wishes.

Blogging is almost like a diary for some. They record their adventures as they move along.

Blogging definitely has it's challenges. Some days we win and some days we lose. We all have our own set opinions on how to blog, what to blog…

Interesting Thing Happened on the Way to Blogging

Interesting things happen when one blogs.  Someone said," use phrases that catch the eye and the mind, get the readers attention."  But my mind obviously does not work the way others do and it leaves some readers very confused, so I am told.

I mentioned in the last blog having a home for your research questions to go to, to roost. To help you wind your way through the maze of documents and data and information that is today presented to a family historian or…

More Society TidBits

  More Society Tidbits.

Here is hoping that most of you have found a home to call home in Genealogy for a Society.  Whether it is a National Society or the local one down the road.  Maybe a Historical Society that fills the space for that region would be good also.  Many start as Historical and branch off to become Genealogical.

A Society can so help you in your research: Surname files, 5 Generation Charts, Pedigree sheets, Family Group Sheets, Compiled…

Societies that are Expanded and the new Needs they Find.

Societies that are expanded and the new needs they find for their society. This topic came up on a sidebar at our board meeting yesterday.  When the society is 65 people and under, almost everyone can remember everyone and share tidbits and make all comfortable.  When a society reaches over the point and is reaching the 80's, 90's and above, one has to make some changes. We learned that a Greeter at the door is very beneficial to the society. It helps to make the…

The Coyle Sisters in the 1940 US Census

Mary Josephine (Mullane) Coyle died in 1927. After her death her unmarried daughters lived together. In the 1930 US Census the sisters were living at 2109 Walton Avenue in the Bronx. Marion, 28 [actually 30], was an operator in the telephone company. Marguerite, 25 [actually 28], was a supervisor in the telephone company. Lillian, 18, was a book keeper for a shoe company. Kathleen, 12 [actually 14], was still in school. They paid $40 a month for the rent on their apartment.

With the…

Joseph Burkholder will

I've been playing around with the Pennsylvania Probate files on Familysearch a lot this week. Been finding little gems left and right. Such as this will for Joseph Burkholder, my GGGGrandfather, who died in 1880. The copy I found is the will book copy, which is a transcription of the original. It reads as follows:…

Sharing Information by -- Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, FMGS, FUGA 5 different things to do at the FGS 2012 Conference

Sharing Information written by  Paula Stuart-Warren, CG, FMGS, FUGA. Paula thank you for this information.

It echos my sentiments and is well stated.

At Burbank Jamboree this year I did this very thing. As Educational Chairperson of our society, I felt I needed to

bring back as much information as I could to help our members doing their research.  Having attended new speakers,

learning new search methods, and shared ideas with others…

The Wolford Connection - Correcting Some Errors

I knew this was bound to happen and I have to correct some errors. The first concerns the three Catherine Kremers or Kraemer. Philip Wolford was married to Catherine Kraemer and they lived in West Manheim Twp., York Co PA. Some of their children went to Centre Co. PA.  Her name is correct. I mentioned that their son John was married to a Catherine Kremer. That is not correct. He was married to Catherine FUHRMAN of York Co PA. Her dates are however correct. Their son John was married to…

Adoption Records

Just opened my mail to learn that Rhode Island has opened up the Adoption Records for people over 25 years of age.

I know a touchy subject but recently learned almost every family or so it seems has adoption  lurking in it's  background.

Does not mean any one was bad or not  liked or mean, it just means that some times it was felt that others could do a       do  a better job or they had no way to support or keep you as a person.

   I do not…

The Wolford Connection - Philip Wohlford's will ( Clinton Co PA )

The following is from the will of Philip Wohlford, son of the previous  Philip who moved over the mountain to Sugar Valley in Clinton Co PA where he lived outside Loganton. He and his wife are buried in the cemetery behind what had been the Lutheran Church. Loganton suffered a disastrous fire in 1917 and half of the town was destroyed including the original Lutheran Church. A bank occupies that spot today. The Lutheran Church rebuilt caty cornered across the intersection from the original…

Like John Wohlford or Wohlfart's will this will is just simply a list of his children and where they lived. Philip's will is dated 28 Nov 1842. Some of his children moved west and those are identified by where they lived. Philip moved over the mountain to Sugar Valley.

List of Heirs:

Jacob

Philip m. Sophia Snook and lived in the Loganton, Clinton Co. PA area commonly referred to as the Sugar…

The Wolford Connection - John Wohlfart Sr's Will (Centre Co PA)

This is the John Wolford who I posted about before Philip. Spelling should have been Wohlford or Wohlfart.

Any of you who followed the Jerry Sandusky trial last week, caught glimpses of the beautiful courthouse where the trial was held in Bellefont PA. That is the same courthouse where brothers John and Philip filed their wills. I believe the older wills are now in the hands of the historical society.

John's children began the migration of Wohlfords. Kleckners and Snooks from…
