With today's technology, not much really surprises me anymore. However, as I am writing this, I am nearly stunned at what I am looking at.
I have a brittle, old photograph of my 3rd great-grandfather, David Brown (there I go again talking about my Browns...). Time has faded and cracked the photo. Many years ago I scanned/digitized the photo to preserve its current state. I really did not think there was much hope in ever restoring the photo to my…

This article should only be read by those who have a computer....
I believe there are only two types of computer users in the world - 1) One whose computer has crashed and 2) One whose computer will crash.
In November 2008 I joined the first group when upon my return from a nice Sunday car ride I found my computer smoking. I lost everything. Thankfully, just one month earlier I had signed up for an online backup service from which I recovered all of my…

Most of us have them. If we could explain them or even get rid of them, we would have greater success in our family tree research.
Unexplained gaps can be the reason for your family tree's brick wall. There are many kinds of gaps to look for. Some gaps can be explained, others cannot. If left unpursued, we may never uncover the "full truth" about the family. Below are some examples.…

This weekend we brought home our family's first puppy - a Toy Poodle.
The next day the breeder called and said they had overcharged my credit card. I thought, "no big deal. It's probably just ten or twenty dollars." Then they admitted it was overcharged by about fifteen thousand dollars.

That's it. I will never be surprised by technology again. When I hear about some new gadget or technology idea - I will no longer think, "yah right, maybe in the future." The future is here.
LIke most genealogists, I like taking pictures - pictures of the family, trees, and cemeteries. When I read about Eye-Fi last night, not only did I realize that the future was here, but I also knew that taking pictures would never be the same.
Eye-Fi makes your digital camera go…

We spend a lot of time looking for our ancestors. Wouldn't it be nice if they just showed up in our email's inbox? With the free tool, Google Alerts, this is possible.

Writing a letter or typing an email just got personal again.
Reading a hand-typed letter from a loved one just does not have the personal touch of a handwritten letter. I have some beautifully-written love notes that my great-grandparents wrote to each other before they were married. Imagine if these notes were typed by a computer?
With this new technology, you can (almost) have the best of both worlds. FontCapture will turn your own handwriting into your personal font…

Today I learned about new technology which will change the way we "Google". For years, to search for something on the Internet, we used a search engine, typed in our phrase, and were shown a list of search results. Google is once again revolutionizing the way we find things.

As you know, I've been pretty excited to install Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 7. It was released today. Early this morning I checked out different software store's websites to see if they had any great specials. To my surprise, many of the stores said the software was already out of stock. I quickly got in my car and headed for the stores.

Most of the time when your computer does not do what you want it to do, it is usually because you have not given it correct instructions.
For example, if you try to maximize a program's window, but instead the program closes, it's likely that you clicked the tiny close button (the small X in the upper right of the program's window) instead of the tiny maximize button (the button immediately to the X's left). Has this ever happened to you? This is known as "operator error". In other…

A few years ago when Microsoft released Windows Vista, I was pretty quick to install the upgrade. I just like new software. But I was also pretty quick to uninstall it and moved back to Windows XP. However, those who have worked with pre-release editions of the new Windows 7 have reported that Microsoft's newest operating system upgrade, due to be released to the public on October 22, 2009, should be much smoother.…
