Advice needed - Web sites for genealogy.

Hi guys,

I'd like some advice please. I'd like to make my own genealogy website/page and would like to know your own experience.

I would prefer a free site but don't mind paying a little for a good one. I have a little knowledge with building websites but am not an advanced user so the simpler the better :-)

Any suggestions?

Ursula

Hi Ursula;
Here is a free site where you could also purchase a domain name. I have a free site here.
http://www.20fr.com/ just click on Free Domain. You get 20mb of free space, you can put a lot of web info in 20mb. You don't need to know code or anything, they give you templates you can modify, very simple. You can also create pages different than the templates if you have some HTML knowledge.
I hope this helps.

It depends really on what you want to use your website for. Many email providers seem to offer free website hosting - for example Orange allow their members to build a website using basic pre-designed templates, which is useful if you are not adept at website design/creation.

I have a free website currently hosted by Bravenet.com. They also offer lots of free website add ons, such as page counters, message forums, visitor books. I've just noticed they also have pre-designed templates available for your webpages. The only drawback to these sort of free hosting sites is that you will get an advertising banner somewhere on your pages.

I've been really happy with a site called www.familytreeguides.com. You can sign up for a free account, and upload your .gedcom to it, and it sorts it into all sorts of reports. You can add pictures, stories, all sorts of things. If you want to pay a little per year, it will remove any advertising banners (but they honestly aren't obnoxious ones - all genealogy related anyway!). You can give other people permissions to add to and change your information if you want, if you are colaborating with your family on it, too. Its worth checking out. Very simple to use, and a very nice format.

Another free one is www.tribalpages.com - but I don't think it looks quite as nice as familytreeguide.com

Thanks Patsy, I'll check out Rootsweb and angel fire.

Can I ask which sites you use?

I've got a Google blog and use Wordpress for some things, I haven't tried using these (yet) for family trees but have the idea that they aren't suitable...

if want free site then I suggest Rootsweb.
Yahoo is getting ready to shut down geocities so dont go there at all.
angel fire i think is still free.

I know a friend who handles people sites for them. I can check with her and let u know something. she does charge but remember how much.

I can do basic websites myself too.
