He died in 890/894 in Orkney, Orkney Islands, Scotland. He married Ragnhild (Hilda) HROLFSDATTER about 867 in Maer, Nord Trondelag, Norway. "On the voyage Sigurd's brother, Earl Rognvald of More, received the Earldom of Orkney from King Harald as compensation for the loss of his son, Ivar. Rognvald had no intentions of staying in the islands so passed the Earldom on to Sigurd, who became Earl Sigurd I of Orkney." "During his many campaigns, Harald allowed his hair to grow long and tangle into dread-locks, vowing that he would not cut his hair again until he was king of all Norway. Thus he had become known as Harald Mop-hair, at least behind his back. At first, Harald ruled primarily in the Southlands and Uplands. Jarl Hakon and his comrade, Rognvald of Mere, had originally fought against Harald Mop-hair, but eventually they realized that they had more to gain as Harald's allies than his enemies. Harald made Rognvald Jarl of North and South Mere and of Raumdall after his victory at Solskiel over Hunthjof, King of Mere, and Nokve, King of Raumdall. When Harald had finally conquered all of Norway, it was Rognvald Eysteinsson, Mere-jarl, who cut Harald's hair and gave him the new name, Harald Fine-hair."

NOTES: (http://historychannel.com/perl/print_book.pl?ID=110507) Viking leader and first duke of Normandy. As leader of the Norman pirates settled at the mouth of the Seine, he attacked (910) Paris and Chartres. By the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte (911) with King Charles III of France, he received in fief the territory his men had occupied (part of the future duchy of Normandy) on condition that he defend it against attack and that he receive baptism. Rollo was baptized (912) as Robert. He supported Charles against Raoul, from whom he obtained additional territory.

NOTES: (www.answers.com/topic/william-i-of-normandy) Little is known about his early years. He was born overseas in one of the many Viking territories before his father Rollo settled in northern France. William's mother was named Poppa; all that is known of her is that she was a Christian, and the daughter of a Count Berengar. According to the Planctus, he was baptized a Christian. William succeeded Rollo sometime around 928. It appears that he faced a rebellion early in his reign, from Normans who felt he had become too Frankified. The following years are obscure. In 939 William became involved in a war with Arnulf I of Flanders, which soon became intertwined with the other conflicts of the reign of Louis IV of France. He was killed by followers of Arnulf while at a meeting to settle their conflict. His son Richard I of Normandy succeeded him.

33. Richard 1 'The Fearless' -Duke of Normandy- lived from 28 AUG 933 (Normandy, France) to 20 NOV 996 (Fecamp, Seine-Inferieure, France). He married Gounor De Crepon -Dutchess- in 978 in Normandy, France. She lived from 950 (Crepon, Denmark) to 1031 (Normandy, France).

NOTES: (www.answers.com/topic/richard-i-of-normandy) Richard was still a boy when his father died, and so he was powerless to stop Louis IV of France when he seized Normandy. Louis kept him in confinement in his youth at Lâon, but he escaped with the assistance of Osmund de Centeville, Bernard de Senlis (who had been a companion of Rollo of Normandy), Ivo de Bellèsme, and Bernard the Dane (ancestor of families of Harcourt and Beaumont). In 968, Richard agreed to "commend" himself to Hugh, Count of Paris. He then allied himself with the Norman and Viking leaders, drove Louis out of Rouen, and took back Normandy by 947. He later quarrelled with Ethelred II of England regarding viking invasions of England because Normandy had been buying up much of the stolen booty. Richard was bilingual, having been well educated at Bayeux. He was more partial to his Norse and Danish subjects than to the French. During his reign, Normandy became completely Gallicized and Christianized. He introduced the feudal system and Normandy became one of the most thoroughly feudalized states on the continent. He carried out a major reorganization of the Norman military system, based on heavy cavalry. He also became guardian of the young Hugh, Count of Paris, on the elder Hugh's death in 956.

Known as 'William the Bastard' to his contemporaries, his illegitimacy shaped his career when you was young. On his father's death in 1035, William was recognised by his family as the heir - an exception to the general rule that illegitimacy barred succession. NOTES: (http://www.britannia.com/history/monarchs/mon24.html) Henry I, the most resilient of the Norman kings (his reign lasted thirty-five years), was nicknamed 'Bleauclerc' (fine scholar) for his above average education. During his reign, the differences between English and Norman society began to slowly evaporate. Reforms in the royal treasury system became the foundation upon which later kings built. The stability Henry afforded the throne was offset by problems in succession: his only surviving son, Willaim, was lost in the wreck of the White Ship in November 1120.

NOTES: (http://www.brintannia.com/history/monarchs/mon26.html) Henry II, first fo the Angevin kings, was one of the most effective of all England's monarchs. He came to the throne amid the anarchy of Stephen's reign and promptly collared his errant barons. He refined Norman government and created a capable, self-standing bureaucracy. His energy was equaled only by his ambition and intelligence. Henry survived wars, rebellion, and controversy to successfully rule on the Middle Ages' most powerful kingdoms.

NOTES: (http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page64.asp) John was an able administrator interested in law and government but he neither trusted others nor was trusted by them. Heavy Taxation, disputes with the Church (John was excommunicated by the Pope in 1209) and unsuccessful attempts to recover his French possessions made him unpopular. Many of his barons rebelled and in June 1215 they forced the King to sign a peace treaty accepting their reforms. This treaty, later known as Magna Carta, limited royal powers, defined feudal obligations between the King and the barons, and guaranteed a number of rights.

NOTES: (http://www.royal.gov.uk/output/Page59.asp) Henry III, King John's son, wasonly nine when he became king. By 1227, when he assumed power from his regent, order had been restored, based on his acceptance of Magna Carta. However, the king's failed campaigns in France (1230 and 1242), his choice of friends and advisers, together with the cost of his scheme to make one of his younger son King of Sicily and hlep the Pope against the Holy Roman Emperor, led to further disputes with the barons and united opposition in Church and State.
