Flag History for the United States was presented at our local meeting yesterday.

It started way back  during the Crusades the beginning of our flag. It was designed, changed, redesigned and altered and changed more until we got to the British and the Scot's mingling it together.  Yes, they did.

It was brought to this country after more mingling and need of a flag separate from Britian. A standard was needed to show the colonies.

Many changes took place, many ideas were passed around, agreed on and then disagreed on. It was unique to

see how the cultural and religious back ground had a lot to do with the development of the flag.

Of course we became independent and had to create our own flag.  Again we went back to the basics and realigned and altered the designs again. Red, White and Blue.  Stars and Bars, Stars and Stripes, lots of stripes then less stripes more stars.

The Civil War came along and again the south created their own flag.  Still it did not get away from the colors and the form.

Lincoln was determined that the Country would be again whole and said they are disagreeing with us as people not as a country.  It was neat to learn that Maryland tried to stay neutral as did two other states.

I meant to ask him if he knew how many actually changes had happened to the flag since the first one for this country in 1786 was accepted.  We know each state meant another star then the design in that field would change.

We know they determined that the bars would remain the same 13 for the original states.

I remember when Hawaii and Alaska were made states and we went from 48 to 50 stars.

It was a great presentation by Karl Zingheim, Historian for the USS Midway.
