As some of you know, one of my major genealogy goals is to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). A few weeks ago I requested a Patriot Lookup for my ancestor Martin Graves, to see if he was already a recognized patriot. Within days I had received an email stating that Martin Graves had indeed been recognized by the DAR. A few weeks ago I faxed off the request for a copy of the original application. After weeks of waiting for a copy of the application, checking the mailbox everyday just to have my heart sink because the copy had not arrived yet, today my heart soared. Finally, it had arrived. The DAR has been amazing and quick with all requests, so my writing finally has nothing to do with them, it has to do with my own impatience at wanting information right away because I am so eager to become a member of the DAR. My grandmother use to tell me I was a daughter of the American Revolution with such pride in her voice and encouraged me to one day become an official member of the DAR. I'm not sure why she never tried to become a member. Something to ask the living relatives who knew her well.

The copy of the application was for a distant cousin I have never heard of. We both have Martin Graves in common and his son Amos; however, we both descend from different sons of Amos. She became a member in 1957, which just put me in instant awe of this application. An ancestor I don't even know, a distant cousin speaking to me from 1957. Holding the copy of this application is surreal. You will have to forgive me, those folks on here who were alive in 1957 and maybe were adults during this time. I wasn't born for another 20 years. As this woman was filling out this application and doing her research to become a member of this prestigious organization I was not even a thought yet. This piece of living history really has me excited.

I am still probably months away from becoming a member, maybe even a year away. I have several pieces of proof to find and order. I will be putting my education and genealogy skills to the test. I will be in research heaven and I cannot wait to complete this project and be able to write the blog that says, "I am an official member of the DAR." Stay tuned...

Congratulations on your successful quest to eventually become a member of D.A.R. It is a fine organization and we enjoy each other's company as well as learning more about our country's history. It underscores the fact that our history is not about only the Washingtons and Lincolns but also about the individual lesser-known patriots who did their part to create this nation.

Thank you Susan and Sandra. I have been to the DAR site and the copy of the application of my patriot ancestor I ordered through the DAR. On the DAR site, I can lookup whether other members are also related to Martin Graves? I have to admit that even with all of my years of experience with websites and the Internet the DAR website overwhelms me. I think it is the design of the website, just a lot of information to take in, but they most likely can't help that. :)

Jennifer: I am a DAR member, Have you been to DAR site? If you haven't already done so, think you can see if there are other DAR members related to Martin Graves. That information might be of great help. In the meantime, start getting copies of birth certificates, marriage certificates of yourself, parents, and others you know in your line.

Jennifer, Congratulations! and it may not be months away... sometimes the records become easy to find, and there are always DAR researchers to help you! And we will all await your I am a member blog! Let me know if I can help,; I go to DC fairly frequently on business, and usually make a stop at the Archves and/or the DAR library when I go.
