The mystery of the old family Bible and who is Frank Molloy?

A very dear cousin recently gave me a large old bible, which belonged to our Great-Grandmother, Mary Belle Doyle (Carr). No births or family tree listed, Just an inscription in the front. The bible was a gift from her nephew. In the bible is a newspaper clipping of the funeral of Frank Molloy. Frank was a young man who drowned in 1886  in Pine Lake, Laporte, Indiana. So the big question is Why did my GGrandmother have this clipping in the bible? an even bigger mystery is..My GGrandma was born in 1886 in Virginia, the same year that frank died. I have searched & searched..can't seem to figure out how he relates to my family. Who is Frank Molloy and is he related to my family??   Hmmm...and the search continues..

Hey Denise!

I haven't forgotten about you, I'm still researching on my own -- so far I've come up with nothing.  lol  I just wanted to check in and say hello.

No problem. I appreciate your help.I agree the Irish is probably from the Lee side. I keep every record that I think may help, even if they are not relevant now. I feel like they may be later, and I would hate to have to look for the record again. so I save them.

Thanks for granting me the patience in revisiting what you already have. I know how it is.  Unless I missed something,  The Irish could be coming from Mr. Robert Lee or Mr. Cooper.  We have those same Irish qualities in one of my lines. Red hair and blue eyes... on black people lol. It is undeniable as far as I am concerned. I had not noticed any freckles though. The items I found so far on Burwell Lee were dated before anyone was born.  Do you keep records like that?  Ones that are relevant but not directly relevant right now?

Okay. i will let you know. I agree. There would surely be a load of records for there pertaining to the family. I do know that it's best to prepare for the trip. categories, that's a good idea. Thanks for the link. I will check it out.

Lol. yes, I have gone through the same thoughts. I just received this clip along with the bible this past spring. I spent days looking at records trying to figure it out, I talked to cousins, anyone that I thought may have an idea of the connection..It drove me so crazy that I had to put it on the back burner for a while. I posted it here on GW out of sheer desperation..lol. Have not put it on the other blog yet. I still haven't figured out who was Irish in Peter's family..but someone was. He had carrot red hair and blue eyes. I have a few ancestors who passed..that has always been part of the story also. I think it's good to think about every possibility..maybe it will lead to finding the answer. I'm going to try and find some of the people listed in the announcement. Can't believe I didn't think about that before!  Maybe that will tell us where it was printed. :)

I know I'm going to end up going to the Library of VA.  It will be some time after Christmas. I will need your help as to what records you think our best shot would be. So we can research it before I go to make sure I hit the most likely ones first. There will be a lot of records to consider. Maybe we can take categories to see which ones we'd want to check for information and for what individual(s) on what dates and what location.  I'm sure there is a genealogy blog I should be reading about how to prepare to research at a library for your ancestors. lol  I've always gone by the hip and I could have missed a whole lot of information.  I'm open to your ideas.  Here is the library's catalog page on their website.  http://www.lva.virginia.gov/public/using_collections.asp#_guides-Bi....

It is a really good thing that you chose to share the stories. I'm guessing you're right about the local paper and the article size. Thinking about it now, it named peoples' first and last names without further titles or locales. I was reading about that on the blog, Mary as an Evangelist.  Which is the ONLY commonality I have found between her and the Molloys besides Irish heritage (the girl was German) and "Midwestern migration". Lol... passing??? When people passed in the North, did they have stories to go with it? I don't want to stretch would could be an otherwise obvious reason. I'll take any logical explanation... :-)  Have you already been through these tunnels and thought process I'm spitting out?  lol  I have some brick walls that I feel no one could ask me an original question about.

Thank you. I really enjoy sharing the stories through the blog.. It also helps to find relatives. I am still looking for the article on my end. I was thinking that maybe it was in the local paper in Laporte, IN. Only because It makes sense that it would be a bigger article in the town where the event took place. I can tell that the clip was previously folded. It has a fold mark across the lower half and alongside the right edge, I don't think that it's visible in the photo that I posted. So it definitely could have been sent in an envelope. It smells very old, like a basement would smell, so does the bible. if you know what I mean.. My G-Grandma Mary was living in Des moines, Iowa. The family moved there in the 1920's. The bibles where given to Mary's daughter after she died. I am told that she  packed them away for years. Mary became an evangelist in her elder years. This was long after Peter died. I don't know if there was a Doyle Bible, well.. that came from Peter's side anyway. I will ask my cousin, she may know something that I don't about a Doyle bible. Thanks for looking into the Burwell lee slaves. That's a brick wall too...Lol

I am very glad I did visit the blog.  I love your style in telling the stories.  I understand a lot more too.  The pictures are really special. Your family is interesting and you have a wonderful oral history.
