The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

I was looking at the MyHeritage group earlier and decided to check out the website. The family website capability that MyHeritage advertizes was attractive to me, along with some of their research tools. (I haven't used Legacy's web page creation function yet, although I've been thinking about it.) Also, their pricing seemed reasonable.

I love Legacy and don't plan on replacing it with the system from MyHeritage, so I was hoping that some of you might be able to tell me about your experience with myheritage and how it works for Legacy users? It looks like the website capability works with GEDCOM files, but I wasn't sure if I would find myself spending too much time trying to get my data straight in their system. Any thoughts about their service - pros/cons?

Kathleen Fox Allen, I use Legacy in my personal computer. I have uploaded a GEDCOM file from Legacy to MyHeritage just to have it out there. I have received several contacts from MyHeritage.com. It is free, so why not use it?
Thanks Phillip! I may still use MyHeritage for some (free) research, but at this point, after seeing comments you wrote about TribalPages on another discussion, I'm leaning toward that for my family site.
I have some limited use with MyHeritage. I did like the site and found it easy to use. I liked the match feature, too. It is free until your tree reaches 500, I believe, and then you have to purchase a subscription in order to fully use its features. In addition, what happens to/how do you access all your information when you no longer wish to pay a subscription? I decided I would rather have all the information on my computer, and pay for the program and upgrade as I need to. I'm not sure if you can download a gedcom from MyHeritage into Legacy.
Thank you for your feedback, Florence. FYI... it looks like now the site is only free until you hit 250 people. Then it seems to be $6.25 per month up to 2500 people and $9.95 per month for unlimited people.

At this point, I'm leaning toward TribalPages.com. It doesn't have the match feature of MyHeritage, but it is slightly higher rated. Also, it is cheaper... either free or $2, $3 or $4 per month, depending on which features you want access to & how many pictures you want to upload.

By the way, according to the MyHeritage site privacy policy, when you no longer subscribe, either you can remove your whole family site (if you're the site manager) or individuals can opt out.
I had a paid MyHeriage site briefly. It was nice, the problem I came across was availability. The site would drag or wouldn't be available for users to logon. You can up and down load your GED. I had to let it go regretably because my family was getting frustrated with the ability to access the site. The 3D tree is a definite visual plus that everyone liked when they could access it. I would also consider familylobby.com.
That's good to know Rochelle. I'm notoriously impatient, so availability problems would drive me batty.
There is no problem in loading a GEDCOM into My Heritage but there is a problem with the site itself, as from the end of this month it limits the free pages to 250 individuals! I would look at Tribal Pages should you wish for a free site and with this site you can load the web files created by Legacy directly into the site.
Thank you Ron. I am leaning toward TribalPages. Do you use it? Any issues of which I should be aware?
Hi Kathleen,

I don't use Tribal Pages myself as I write most of my own pages and use a paid for host. I do, however, do a fair amount of sorting out problems for those who do, largely due to their inexperience and not a problem with the host!

For me the one thing I don't like about sites such as this is that they are not open to the general public and passwords etc. are required for access. This is great for those who wish to retain the privacy and, perhaps, only have it for their family, but no good for me. That apart I find Tribal Pages easy to use.
Hi Kathleen,

I use Tribal Pages and have found it to be very good to display information for the immediate family ( using a password ). I must admit that the first time I used TP I was extremely disappointed in that the information had not been displayed correctly. They have since lifted their game.

Up/down loading GEDS is easy and the free version allowed me to display my whole database, but this is not overly large, only about 2000 units.

The free version only allowed me to show 50 photos and individual stories up to 500 words with no extras. I now have a paid site ( US$29.99 / AUS$37.26 per year or $2.50 / $3.10 per month ) which now allows me to display 1000 photos and a 2500 word limit on INDIVIDUAL stories as well as acess to all the extras.

I have found that the site is easy to use and allows ease of access for my family members. It does have a " find a family connection in other trees ".

Thank you for the information, Arnie!

If I understand correctly, the stories and pictures that you mentioned do not get overwritten when you upload an updated GEDCOM; instead, they reattach based on the individual's name. Is my understanding accurate?
Your understanding is correct. At first I thought that I may have to re-attach stories and photos after up-loading another GEDCOM but not so.

You can allow your family access in a couple of ways. Firstly by supplying them with a password or by inviting them to enter their e-mail address and creating their own password. This last scenario allows you to then see who has been into the site. The site creates an activity log for you.

You can also limit the amount of sensitive information shown by " hiding " say, formation about living rellies even if they have the access code or they have created their own code.

What people see is totally in your hands, you are in complete control of what is available.
