Hi all, I've posted about this on the Brick Wall site too, but this really is an Aussie problem. Kind of. My 3x Great Grandmother, Mary Squire was born either in Devon or Cornwall England, no idea when or where she got here, although on 30 Nov 1844 in Scotts Church in Sydney she married James Bennett, I have a fully copy of the wedding certificate, and no family listed, and the witness names are not familiar. They moved to Melbourne, and had 3 children, the latest Sarah Jane Courtney Bennett born 1848 in Brunswick, after that we here nothing, until James remarries on 1 Jan 1851 to an Emily Reeves, they have 2 children that die. Then James dies in 1857 and Emily gives the details, including the wrong names of his first lot of children. Thats it. James is buried at Melbourne General Cemetery Carlton, no mention of Mary at all. I've looked and looked and looked. I think she might have a mother called Courtney because of her daughters name Sarah Jane Courtney - just a guess, but that's it. Any idea's anyone?

On the wedding Certificate, does it disclose an age for Mary SQUIRES? In other words is her year of birth able to be determined or approximated? VJ
They were both aged 30 in 1844, no occupations listed, nothing else either. I guess this is a help in that it shows they were the same age and now we know she was born approximately 1814. Thanks for getting me to look at the certificate again, who knows what I could have missed.
Hi, Jo - can you forward a copy of the document(s) - might save some back and forth time :) - Cheers - VJ
Taking a leaf out of Louise GENGE's book, so to speak, further digging reveals James BENNET and Mary SQUIRE arriving in Australia on the same boat, same voyage and, by deduction, via Port Phillip - see attachment. VJ

Hi VJ, thank you for all of the research and the help you've given. I'm sorry I've taken so long to reply. Looking for Mary is hard, it's like a jigsaw with pieces missing, and not knowing where the dog hid them! But thanks to everyone on this site I'm getting closer all the time. Thanks again for going out of your way. Kindest Regards, JO.
Is this Mary Squire coming in via Melbourne? I looked there because for years I couldn't find one of mine-and found if they came via Melbourne they were processed there

I honestly don't know HOW she got here, although I know she was single, I don't even know if she were travelling alone. I've also seen Squire spelt Sqyres. So it's a bit like a Smith in a way. Thanks for looking, I actually found those entries too, but I don't know how to tie them to her. Kind Regards
Hello Jo,

Hi Jo

Have you checked the Divorce records. I had a relative that Divorced about the same time and I never thought of checking as I didn't think that Divorce was the done thing in those days.

Sarah Jane Courtney BENNET m Andrew STEWART in Victoria Reg Number 641/1871 Pioneer Index. Might be a help to get that certificate

Regards Val
