The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

I was looking at the MyHeritage group earlier and decided to check out the website. The family website capability that MyHeritage advertizes was attractive to me, along with some of their research tools. (I haven't used Legacy's web page creation function yet, although I've been thinking about it.) Also, their pricing seemed reasonable.

I love Legacy and don't plan on replacing it with the system from MyHeritage, so I was hoping that some of you might be able to tell me about your experience with myheritage and how it works for Legacy users? It looks like the website capability works with GEDCOM files, but I wasn't sure if I would find myself spending too much time trying to get my data straight in their system. Any thoughts about their service - pros/cons?

Very helpful! Thanks again!
Hello Ron,

Again, thank you.

Much of the reason I want to put my family's tree online is to let some of my young nieces and nephews explore the ways in which they're related to each other and people who lived long ago. So, I'll need to show information for living people. Since that brings up all kinds of privacy concerns, I think that a password protected site is best for me. I also like the fact that TribalPages seems to take it a step further and will let me allow access by invitation only.
I have found that a lot of the time the "Smart Matches" aren't even close to the same person -- completely different given or surnames, dates and locations i.e. my person born about 1780 in VA the match born 1820 in NC. Sometimes it seems that the only thing that matches is the given name of the spouse.
It can be frustrating when they say you have 50 matches and almost all of them aren't even close to being your person.
I appreciate the information, Carldine! The Smart Matching was one of the big draws for me, but I can get frustrated with non-matching records all by myself, and it's cheaper!
I have to say I do like MyHeritage's free software - but I'm just a beginner; and am using it as a stopgap on our PC laptop until I fully settle on what software to use. My problem is that I use my Mac for the most part; and our PC laptop is, sadly I believe, getting ready to pass on. (The CD/DVD drive is knackered; and it's more than the thing is worth to fix it!) So, while I dither on what to do software-wise (Reunion is $100, but cheaper than a new laptop - and I do most of my work on the Mac anyway - but, but, but...); I'm working along on Ancestry; and playing with FamilyTreeBuilder 4 and Legacy 7, the free versions.

My (admittedly pretty uninformed) 2 cents worth, LOL...
Midgie
Thank you, Midgie! Everyone's 2 cents worth is welcome (else I suppose I shouldn't have asked :-)).

I'm not a Mac person, but for my 2 cents, I'll say that I love Legacy. Legacy's website says that "Legacy runs on newer Macs with Windows installed under Bootcamp, Parallel or Fusion." I'm not sure exactly what that all means, but I'm sure some of the other group members could give you some feedback.

Thanks again,
Kathleen
