Good morning-
Question for you, "What is the best way to back up my Legacy program files?" I have lost my work before, do not want to do it again (as you probably understand :) ).
Thank you,
Craig.

Craig - my personal preferences is to use an offsite backup system such as that at Mozy.com. I wrote about this at http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2008/11/how-i-survived-my.... I also backup to external hard drives.
Hi Geoff-
Thank you for the information on Mozy. I will look into this system.
Craig.
Maybe I am paranoid but I backup my program each day as I am constantly adding to it. I just acquired the new program from microsoft Live Mesh Beta with gives me 5 gb of online storage for free. I put a copy of my backups online. I also keep my program on my laptop and update it regulary with the current backup from my Legacy file. I also use a usb drive and backup the file to it as that goes with me so I know no matter what happens I have my files and images on that usb drive. I also use a external hard drive to backup my entire drive, this I do weekly. The best advice I can offfer you is to keep at least one of the backups in a separate place so no matter what happens you still have your material. And by the way life mesh lets me log in from different computers to access the data that I have in that folder.

Hi,
You have a number of options.
I however export to GEDCom and on to a Pen drive (Thumb drive) plus my external hard drive, the GEDCom also goes on to a DVD at the end of each year as well along with quite a fair bit of other data and photos, I keep a copy and at lest four other DVD's are shipped off shore to distant family that have shown some interest in my work.
I have over 3,000 records so you can understand why I take the extra steps of having other back ups to call on if I need one in the event of my mai hard drive giving up the ghost.
Hi Craig,
I backup to a flash drive everytime I work on Legacy (several flash drives, actually). One copy stays near the computer, and one goes with me in my bag wherever I go. I also regularly send a copy to three of my daughters as they live in three differenct locations - about as far apart as you can get in Australia, one in Darwin (north) one in Adelaide (south) and one near Sydney (east). Perhaps I should send one to my grandson in Perth (west). I figure we are unlikely to have disasters in all locations at the same time. They have all genealogical records, personal histories and scanned photos and documents. You see, I figure a computer crash is not the only way to lose these things. I have also put it all in to the LDS archives, and they are stored in Granite Mountatin. Be careful which sites you put it in to - it is not always possible to retreive it if you stop subscribing!

Short answer - use a flash drive.

Happy researching, Denise
How do I know if it is on my flashdrive? Is there a certain place in the backup family files to direct it to the flash drive?
Carol, if you click on file/backup family file, a pop up window will appear asking which files you want to back up.
I tick all the boxes
Then there is a long button asking you to Select name and location for date backup, if you click this you can then direct it to where you have your flash drive (mine plugs into a USB port and appears as G drive but it would be different on each computer)
There is also a button asking the same for the multimedia files
The default location for all these would be in the data folder in Legacy programme file
hope this helps
cheers
Thank you Ericka
I like to back mine up with a flash drive too, it's so mobile and you can share it with anyone at anytime.
I can recommend Mozy 2gb free online storage and you can schedule the backup to run at a time to suit you every day, I also use Windows Live Sync to keep my Legacy database the same on all my computers laptops and desktops on a wireless network

Check into Carbonite.com as well. Not free but reasonable.
I can feel for you, as this has happened to me. This is what I do now EVERY TIME I add one or more names to my tree I download the whole file onto a USB Drive and over write it each time. Stress free.
