Genealogy Wise

The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

I am new to the group. I am researching for Dwyer and Tighe in St. Louis City and the Flaherty family in East St. Louis, IL. (lots of people in East St. Louis had ties with people in the City.
I work at the Midwest Genealogy Center in Independence, so Genealogy is both my work and my hobby.
My Dwyers begin in Ireland (where?), then go to Connecticut, NYC and then St. Louis. They are Michael and Julia. They lived on Mullanphy St. in the City; later generations-my grandparents lived on Page near St. Mark's Church.
My Tighes are John and Ellen Thompson Tighe from Co. Roscommon, lived in St. Louis City. The son is John Tighe and his wife Mary Flaherty Tighe.
Hope this an intro that might bear some fruit. Thanks! Suzanne

Hi Suzanne-
What information are you looking for on these families? What time period are you looking for them?
My DWYER family arrived in St. Louis about 1870 (Michael and Julia) Their sons- all except my grandfather never married and stayed in that house until they died. I have always searched for siblings of Michael. I have no clue though who they would be. Julila was a Sullivan (only about the second most common Irish name! Don't have any idea where they came from in Ireland- no pictures, no tombstones, nothing.
My TIGHE family arrived in St. L City about 1850 (John and Ellen Thompson) I have found where they were from- County Roscommon and have gotten their marriage certificate from Balllintubber. The town information was on a tombstone that no one in my family knew existed!
Here again, I wonder about siblings. There are Tighes in the area, but I haven't found a way yet to connect them. The son lived at 2120 Washington for quite a whhile. When Ellen died, John, Sr. married Mary Queenan.
I did find John Sr. in a book with ads from the Boston Pilot I think it's called "Missing Immigrants" and a nephew in Baltimore was looking for him.
Hope this isn't more than anybody wanted to know!
I once worked at Barnes Hospital here in St. Louis wiht a John Tighe. I knew him, but not well enough to know about this family roots. Try the St. Louis phone directory, there are MANY Tighe families here, see if one is "into" the family genealogy...and ask about John who used to work in Human Relations at Barnes Hospital...there is a John listed... good luck!
I don't have those names but would be interested to know what the cost would be to get info online from the library where you work/
I have a lot of family in MO. Bowen, Fisher, Faulconer, Witcher, Stephens.

You can certainly look at our website to see what we have. Of course you can't get Ancestry at home, but we have some good databases available. Cards are free of course to our three county area (Jackson, Clay, Platte), but for anywhere else, the cost is $20 for one year (not Dec., but one year from issue.) Take a look at our website: mcpl.lib.mo.us Click on genealogy and local history.
