Another brick wall! William Anderson Lowe was born in NC abt 1833. On his death certificate, Alamance Co was listed as his birthplace with his father as Washington Lowe. I was recently in Salt Lake City at the library and had 2 "experts" helping me. We believe that Henry Lowe (from the 1850 census) is his father. It shows a son Anderson as 23. No record could be found in Alamance Co for a Washington, Henry, or William Lowe.

All help appreciated.

Nice to hear from you again.

William Anderson Lowe is my 2nd G-GF. According to his death certificate (Ancestry.com), he died 2 Nov 1912 on Oakwood Ave, Sanford, Lee Co, NC. He was listed as William Anderson "Lou." We know this is my 2nd G-GF because the informant is my GGM, Amanda Ruth Thrower (Amanda Ruth Lowe who married Ira Clay Thrower).

I have no marriage record yet but Delila Jane Mulinix is his wife. He is the informant on her death certificate. Both are buried in Buffalo Cemetery, Sanford, NC. I have a picture of the joint tombstone (Findagrave.com).

On the censuses he is located in the following places:
1850 census - age 23, single
1860 census - age 26, married, Eastern Division, Randolph Co, NC
1870 census - age 35, married, Mount Gilead, Montgomery Co, NC
1880 census - age 47, married, Stewartsville, Richmond Co, NC
1900 census - age 66, married, Maxton, Robeson Co, NC
1910 census - age 76, widowed, East Sanford, Lee Co, NC

listed in American Civil War Soldiers (Ancestry.com)

First child listed on 1860 census is Wiley Lowe, age 4, b abt 1856 in NC
Gene,

Thanks for your help.

I got the 1850 census from Ancestry.com. It seemed to fit (except for the date) since it was the only Anderson Lowe I found. When my cousin emailed me that she had found his death certificate which listed his father as Washington, I looked for a Washington Lowe (Low). In SLC, the expert helpers said nothing seemed to match and they thought Henry Lowe was the one that was his father, possibly a Henry Washington Lowe.

It seems strange that they would have moved to Illinois for the 1860 census because he is later back in NC. However, both sets of my grandparents moved to VA from NC for a brief time because of jobs/land. Other than them, it seems that my entire direct line came to NC and stayed there. My grandparents were the first ones to leave.

Thanks for the NC Marriage Bond. I guess I missed it because of the different spellings of both last names.
The thought occurred to me that Washington could be a female ancestor's maiden name. A lot of them used a maiden name as a middle name to carry on the line. In fact, I did the same thing to my son.

The LDS "expert helpers" in SLC thought Henry was the one. I checked all the brothers and sisters listed to see if a parent showed up living with them or any other such information, but did not find much at all on any of them.

Nothing left to do but keep digging. I may submit a query to the NC Genealogical Society. Maybe someone there could come up with something.

Thanks for all your work! You must love mysteries and puzzles.

Gene,

I used the spellings for William A Lowe (Low) and Delila Jane Mulinix (Muliniks) and found their records in the NC Marriage Collection also.

Thanks again!

Gene,

I feel like a deer in the headlights!

While you were busy sending me those messages, I was actually doing something you mentioned. I was getting a list of all the Low/Lowes in Guilford Co, NC, so that I can compare and check age groups to see what matches.

I have printed out all your suggestions and links so that I can better keep track of what I am doing and need to do. The rest of this week I will be trying your suggestions and "keep on digging."

Do not think I have dropped away next week. We are leaving next Tuesday for a 2-week cruise. Then I will be back to work on genealogy.

Thanks for adding me as a friend. You have certainly helped me.

Louise
One day we may just get that breakthrough -- hopefully one day soon! I have a 2nd cousin who is also trying to break that wall. With the three of us, it should come tumbling down!

Louise
