He was born on Oct 19, 1865 in Hånsdala, Skaraborg, Sweden to parents Gustaf Jonas Magnusson and Maria Christina Larsdotter. He was the only one in his immediate family to emigrate. He arrived on the SS Arizona in NY on April 13th 1891. His destination was "Illinois, USA". I haven't found any match in the US Census'. Have had help from various very generous researchers in the US, to no avail. Hopefully I'll get lucky in this forum...

Good morning, Monica-
What other information do you have that that allows you to eliminate the Oscar Gustafsons that appear on the census records?

Do you know if he married, had children, his occupation? And do you know when he died?

Kate
Good morning (afternoon for me..) Kate,

Unfortunately, I don't have anything further than this (sigh!).
I got the information from my grandmother that he wasn't heard from after he left Sweden. She also told me that his brother, Johan Simon Gustafsson/Wallin, went searching for him in 1895 (he was back in Sweden by 1898), without being able to locate him. Both his brothers, who remained in Sweden, were carpenters and his father was a farmer, but if that was to be his profession in his new homeland - I don't know... And of course, I have no death date. I only have this photo of him, that was taken in "Chicago, Illinois". I'm beginning to think this is a futile search, but I'm hoping one day someone might have a lead....
Thanks for trying!

Monica
Do you have the passenger list that you found him on, if you could post it as an attachment, that would be great-
This is from the journey from Liverpool/Queenstown to NY with the SS Arizona arriving in NY on April 13th. He left Gothenburg on the ship "Romeo" on March 27th. You can read all of this on my homepage: http://www.staversjo.com/Html/p1084333d.html (copy and paste)

Thank you again! :-)

A couple of suggestions-

1. Post your photo on Lost Faces, see if they can help determine an estimate of a year for his style of dress and studio. I see you have posted regarding the photo on other forums.

2. Look at the Illinois death index, there are some Oscars that could be your GG Uncle. At this point, I would say unless you find a death record with his known parents, you are going to have a very difficult time finding anything else on him.

3. Have you found evidence of his brother arriving in the US to search for him?

Kate
Thanks for the suggestions! I will try the Lost Faces page too.
I do have the death record for his father - and all it says is that both OA and his brother JS is "somewhere in the US" at the time. No help there! Yes I've found his brother's arrival too. On his first leg from Gothenburg to Liv/Queenst it says he is going to Boston, Massachusetts and on the next leg to the US it shows he's going to Plattsmouth, Nebraska. There are Oscar's to find in that state too...

Monica
Hi Gene,
Thank you for all your efforts trying to locate"my mysterious gg uncle"! Unfortunately I have already investigated those records. I truly wanted this Oscar and Hilda to be "mine" - with children.... But both Oscar's and John's (should be Simon as that really was Oscar's brother's first name) birthdates are off, both month and year. Oscar b Oct 19, 1865 and brother J Simon b Oct 30, 1869. This Oscar's arrival date is right on. J Simon arrived 1895 to try and find Oscar and remained until 1898 when he came back to Sweden according to the churchbooks. So it appears he wasn't in the US at the 1900 census. I haven't totally ruled it out yet though...

The Oscar that died in 1899 could very well be mine, but how do you go further than this certificate? It doesn't give you any information at all other than the name and cause of death.
I have also found one Oscar Gustafson who married one Annie Lewis in Cook Co, Illinois, June 1891. He 26 yo (match!) and she 39 yo. Haven't found these two in any of the US Census' as of this day.

I am sooo out of clues/leads right now - but thank you both so much for trying!!!
Hi Monica-

If you order the certificate, sometimes the certificates list parents and the birthplaces of the parents, but you would have to order the death ceritficate. I know there are sites where you can do this.

Also, the census records are notorious for being 'off' on birth years and months. :) If these match otherwise, I would definitely look into this family. Perhaps the church records may be 'off' as well?

I will definitely look into the Oscar and Annie possibility.
Hi GJ - presumably in the US? ;-)

3. Oskar's father Gustaf Jonas died on September 19, 1896 and in his probate it is mentioned that both his son's, Oskar Albin and Johan Simon, are at the time "in some unknown place in the Northern part of the US" (Could the "northern" here mean Canada/Alaska as well?)
4. I will have to try this one. I have tried to find a reference (or any information at all really) to/abt "Lindner's New Studio" on google, but haven't found any. What I have found though are some photo's on a Swedish genealogical site - but without a reference to the year they were taken.

/Monica
Hi Gene,
I found the records about his travel on Ancestry and I have copied them to my homepage; on Oscar's page: http://www.staversjo.com/Html/p1458f97b.html. I have gotten alot of new input from both you and Kate - and I will surely be busy searching for this information this weekend!

I read Kate's reply below - if the Studio was run and operated only by this Charles W Lindner and closed after his death - the photo would surely have been taken pre 1898 - which could mean my Oscar is the one who dies in 1899... I have this Oscar's death certificate on my other computer. It only mentions that he dies from pneumonia and his age - 26 - that he's Swedish and the physicians name. But I'll post it as soon as I get home.

Monica
On Footnote, I found a Charles W Lindner at 9222 Commercial Ave in 1893, same address as the studio that appears on the photo of Oskar. 1894 Charles is still there. In 1901 I find a Bertha Lindner, widow to Charles, living on Commercial Ave near where the studio is. I searched the Illinois Pre-1916 death index and found that a Charles W Lindner died in 1898, so its possible that if Charles W took the photo that it was between 1893-1898.

It could be that another Lindner reopened the studio after Charles died, but Oskar looks close to 30 years old in the photo, so I think it hits the right time period.
Hi Kate,
This is a route I never thought of checking - for the photographer himself... See my answer about this on the previous post! I surely need alot of "free time" for this this weekend! Thank you both!

Monica
