Delete Discussion..Looking for information on my 3rd great grandparents Obadiah Daniels/Mary Anne Varney. I believe they may have been from New Hampshire originally, but that is speculation on my part. I have very little information on them. Obadiah born perhaps mid 1700's. Mary Anne born perhaps 1800/1805. I believe Obadiah was quite a bit older than Mary Anne. They had eleven children; the first a daughter Sarah, born maybe Stockbridge, VT. about 1816; the last was a son, William, born Nov 30, 1844 in FT. Ann, NY. Two of the children, sisters, were my great great grandmothers. I know in 1830 they were admitted as members of the church at Middle Granville, NY. Atter the birth of the last child, Obadiah and Mary Anne seem to just disappear.
Any information on this family will be greatly appreciated. I have been caught in the same place on this family for several years. Thank you for any help. Tags: anne, county, daniels, mary, new, obadiah, varney, vermont, washington, york

Hi Gene,
Sorry about the delay. Just as I received your message, it started thundering and lightening. I don't like to be on the computer then so had to wait.
By following your graphics that you sent me, I found it much easier to figure out how to do the start of the discussion. Your change of notes makes sense to me but it may be because I have already done one.
Thank you for the info that you sent along. Actually, I had recently found the piece on the probate records for Joseph Daniels. I think my Obadiah is one of the grandsons mentioned, but have no proof of that to date. Someone had told me that there was an Obediah listed on the tax records, but again, no proof. And just a few days ago I came across the listing for the letters that were left at the Post office. I believe this may be my Obediah also. The last item regarding the death of the 28 year old Obadiah, I feel is not mine. He may be related but I don't think he is mine.
I looked over my records and just figured out the connection that you mention with Preston. If I am correct, Herman Preston married Julia Daniels.
See my next message for answers to the children that you requested.

Gene, You asked for the names of the children of Obadiah and Mary Anne (Varney) Daniels. I have a copy of a paper that was written by Abigail Daniels, so I am assuming this is probably accurate. "Abigail born in Barnard, Woodstock Co, VT Aug 26, 1819. Abigails mother was Mary Anne Varney, her father was Obadiah Daniels; Abigails sisters were Mary Anne who married Jerry Wilkins; Abigail married Joshua Stark; Amandy married Squire Morehouse (farmer near Pollet (Pawlet) ); Maria married Will Nelson (lived in Pollet); Julia married Herman Preston (Mendon); Jane married Blanchard (lived Stockbridge near Rutland): Sarah died with consumption, measels 12 years old; Eliza married Nelson Pitts. Brothers were Charles (went to war to Mexico and So. America. Died in Marine Hospital in New Orleans; William lives at Rutland. )" From census and other records I have the following information. Eliza married George Nelson Pitts Sr. They were my gggrandparents. Jane (whose real name was Emily Jane) married Allen John Blanchard. They are also my gggrandparents. Sarah was born about 1816, possibly Stockbridge, VT died abt 1828; Mary Anne (the daughter) born 29 Jan 1818, died 22 Oct 1884; Abigail born 26 Aug 1819, died 08 Aug, 1910, married Joshua Stark 1838; Amandy born abt 1822; Emily Jane born abt 1823 died 13 Aug, 1892; Eliza A born 18 Dec 1827 died 10 Oct 1894; Charles born abt 1831 died 24 Nov 1862; Julia born abt 1834; Caroline born abt 1837 died 28 Feb 1897 married Alfred Cary; Maria born 15 Apr 1840 died 03 Oct 1814 married William D. Nelson; William J born 30 Nov 1844 died 31 Jan 1916 married Nellie ?(unknown)

Hi Gene,
I don't seem to be having any luck with Stockbridge town clerk even getting back to me on my query. I ran into this problem with another Vermont town also. Any suggestions on what I can do.
Eileen
Hi Gene,
It has been a while. My computer got tired and had to purchase new one. Then I couldn't get back into this. But now I'm back, though not much new to report. I did contact the Stockbridge Town Clerk's office regarding the old Town Records. They didn't find anything on Obadiah Daniels, or Mary Anne. They did however, find a death certificate for Jane Daniels Blanchard and Allen Blanchard. Allen died June 29 1893 from Consumption; parents were Moses and Susie Rowe Blanchard. Jane died August 13, 1892 from disease of spine; parents Obadiah and Mary Daniels. I had that info before, but now have the certificates to verify. No other trace of Obadiah. He seems to have just disappeared.

It says she was born in Stockbridge, Vermont.
Hi, Well, I finally got a chance to check out the births in New Hampshire on FamilySearch Labs. While I did find a couple of names that could possibly be in the family, I still have nothing to tie it in with my Obadiah. Thanks for the suggestion though...the search continues.

Hi Gene,
The birth records I had an interest in were for a son born 13 July, 1857 to Peletiah and Comfort Daniels and a daughter born 19 Oct, 1850 also to Peletiah and Comfort Daniels. Both children born Barrington, Strafford, NH. Neither child named on birth certificate.
My reasoning for these was because of an abstract of a will for Joseph Daniels of Madbury, NH. His wife was Mehitable (maiden name not given). Their children named in the will were sons Joseph, Samuel, Peletiah and David and a daughter Abigail. Also grandsons Reuben and Obadiah son of Obadiah (deceased). Because I know they had a tendency to name their children after family members, it seemed a reasonable deduction. I suspect that my Obadiah came from Strafford County but to date have no proof of that.

To continue my information on the children of Obadiah Daniels/Mary Anne Varney: According to the journal of Abigail Daniels Stark, Mary Anne Daniels (daughter of above), married Jerry Wilkins. 1850 census, Granville, NY; J. (note the ages of Jeremiah and Mary Ann in 1850 and 1860 census. Maybe the same people, maybe not.???). No other helpful info from Abigail's Journal.
I have very little information on Charles. I did find an 1860 census that may, or may not be the correct Charles Daniels. 1860 Clarendon, Rutland, VT; Charles H. Daniels age 29, male, white, farmer, real estate value 375; personal property 50 born Vermont; wife Sarah age 31, female, white born C.E.; daughter Caroline age 12, female, white, born NY.

Also little on William: From Abigail's journal: "William lives in Rutland"

There is a note in Abigail Daniels Stark's journal that states that she died age 91 years 11 mos and 8 days. Obviously that was entered by someone after she had passed.
In addition there is a little story that presumably was written by Abigail. It won't help to identify anyone, but I found it interesting and thought others would also enjoy it. True or not? You figure.
"When this county was new, Obadiah lived in Cavendish. Went to mill, was belated chased by wolves. He had meal codfish and ham. The wolves circled around him. He dropped first the meal, then fish and ham and succeeded in escaping but he was the bloodiest creatur."
I have death certificate of William J. Daniels, residence Stratton Road, Rutland, VT white, age 72 yrs 2 mo; farmer, born NY, father Obadiah Daniels, mother Mary Ann Varney, mother's birthplace unknown; date of death 31, June 1916; cause of death heart disease; duration 79; also obit for William J.
