Hi Pam! I am descended from William S. Callaway and Elizabeth M. Brown Callaway of Jackson, TN. In some records their name appears as Calloway, and some as Callaway (my great-great grandparents). They were married 1/22/1840 in Jackson, TN. The census records show they were both born in VA - he was born in 1811 and she in 1812. So far, I cannot get back any farther than when they first appeared in Jackson when they were married, and would appreciate anyone's help with any other tips or information.

I have no idea what the "S" stands for, but my gut feeling is that it could be Sugars. My grandfather's name was Lee Sugars Callaway, and from viewing all of the names of my grandfather's 10 brothers and sisters, their names came from someone else in the family, present or past, so a Sugars could be a part of our past (possible great-great-great grandmother?) Other hints would be the first name Lee, the names Taylor, Acton, and Hubbard (great-grandfather had a brother named James Hubbard Callaway, who died when he was only 8.) Again, I would appreciate anyone who might have some hints or recognize any of these names in their line.

Welcome Linda!

Do you have the names of your grandfather's 10 brothers & sisters?Sometimes I can get clues by looking at the siblings of my ancestor.

Yes, with some of names from some of the hints I said above. I hit the jackpot with my great-great-grandmother's family yesterday, though. One of the names I mentioned, Acton, I confirmed was her maiden name. I thought she had been married before and Brown was her first husband's name, as the 1850 census showed two children, 11 and 14 with the last name Brown living with the Callaways. I found someone's tree on Ancestry and found her little sister, then went from there. They're from Fincastle, Boutetort County, Virginia, and I found the marriage date of her first marriage to Robert Brown. Even one of my grandfather's brothers was named Charles Brown Callaway, after the Charles Brown that would have been his half-uncle, from his grandmother's first marriage!

Elizabeth and William S. Callaway were married in 1840 in Jackson, TN, and both hailed from VA, I figured they could have possibly moved there together, or knew each other from VA, lived close to one another. So, if my theory is true, William S. Callaway and his family must have lived somewhere around Fincastle or Boutetourt County! Feel I'm getting warmer....Anyone know any Callaways from that area?
That's GREAT news Linda! But just make sure that information is correct. A lot of information on the net or on Ancestry is wrong. You need to double check everything OK?

P.S. I would check with each county public library in VA. to see if they have anything on your Callaway ancestors. You can find there addresses on the net. Just use the Search box.
Hi All!

I don't know what happened to my post so I'll do it again. My 4th great-grandparents were: Jain Callaway & Nehemiah Hearn.I don't have their marriage date or where. They lived on Little Creek Hundred in Sussex Co.,DE. He died 2 Oct.1815 & is buried in Broad Creek Hundred. She died 16 Sept.1822 probably Sussex Co.,DE. Her parents were: Issac Callaway born circa 1724 Somerset Co.,MD. & Mary Eleanor? What's her maiden name? I descend from Peter Callaway, the immigrant.

The children of Jain & Nehemiah Hearn were: Esther,Daniel(my line),Jemima,Jaine B.,E.Ann.Deborah,Nehemiah,Mary,Azel,Nathanial,Josiah & Nancy Hearn.

Anybody related? Thanks!
