I have several brick walls in my family tree. This one has stumped me for years. My Great, Grandmother Darthula Dalue SMITH-EADS was married to William Franklin EADS JR and they resided in Wayne County, Missouri area. Darthulas Father was Charles SMITH and his wifes name was Lucinda or Lacinda, I have seen it spelled both ways. I cannot find her Maiden name anywhere. Apparently the Wayne County Missouri Courthouse burned at some point back there and all the records were lost. I would dearly love to find out WHO she was and where she came from. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to proceed? Thank you!

Hi-
Do you have census records for these families? Do you know when/where they died? Feel free to post any records you have for the families so we can determine where to look next. :)

Welcome to the group. :)

Ok, here is what I have on this family:

Charles Frank SMITH
(b) 22 Feb. 1852 in Wayne County, Missouri
(d) 25 June 1914 in St. Francois, Wayne, Missouri

Missouri Death Certificate Database lists him as being Charles H. SMITH but I believe it to be a Transcription error, his middle name was Frank and if you look at the Certificate closley you can see it is in F and not an H.

PARENTS: Alexander "Dock" SMITH and Catherine E. WRIGHT-SMITH (I have also seen Catherine listed as Sarah Catherine WRIGHT-SMITH)

CENSUS RECORDS:

1860- Greenville, Saint Francois, Wayne, Missouri

Charles is 8 yrs old and living in the house with his parents and the following people:

Alexander SMITH (Father)
Catharine SMITH (Mother)
Margaret SMITH age 10

Source Citation: Year: 1860; Census Place: St Francois, Wayne, Missouri; Roll M653_660; Page: 0; Image: 47.

1870 Census-Saint Francois, Wayne, Missouri-Greenville

Alexander SMITH-age 46 Catherine SMITH-age 47
Margeret SMITH age 23
Charles SMITH age 19
Alexander SMITH age 8
Mary SMITH age 6
Thomas ODell age 22 (dont know what his relationship to the family was at this point, he was born in Georgia)

Source Citation: Year: 1860; Census Place: St Francois, Wayne, Missouri; Roll M653_660; Page: 0; Image: 47.

1880 Census-St. Francois, Wayne Missouri
Charles SMITH-age 28
Lucinda SMITH-age 27
Dasthuler SMITH age 5 (this should be Darthula Dalue SMITH)
James A SMITH age 3
Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Saint Francis, Wayne, Missouri; Roll T9_740; Family History Film: 1254740; Page: 239.4000; Enumeration District: 191; Image: 0685

I have a marriage record between Charles SMITH and Donia KOSINER dated 28 June, 1896,Wayne County, Missouri
Source Information:
Ancestry.com. Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2007. Original data: Missouri Marriage Records. Jefferson City, MO, USA: Missouri State Archives. Microfilm.

NOTE: On Charles Death Certificate it lists him as being Divorced , but right above the word Divorced they have written a "W" which I believe to mean that he was first Widowed by Lucinda and then Divorced from Donia.

1900 Census- Wayne County, Missouri St Francois
We find a Charley SMITH age 42 living in the following household:
Alexander SMITH-76
Catherine E SMITH-77
Charley SMITH-42
Alexander W SMITH-38 aka Tonce
Tabitha SMITH-20 (Alexander W`s wife, Tabitha ROACH-SMITH)
Ella C. SMITH-2
This census shows Charlie as being married but it makes no mention of his wife or her whereabouts???

The Last Census I can find him on is 1910

Wayne County, St Francois
Charles F SMITH-58- Widowed- Living alone.
Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Saint Francois, Wayne, Missouri; Roll T624_827; Page: 1A; Enumeration District: 164; Image: 1117.

He died 25 June 1914 in Wayne County, Mo. He is buried at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery near Greenville.
Now, I am wondering if perhaps he Divorced Lucinda and was widowed from Donia? Or was it the other way around? This is all the info I have on them. I cannot locate a Missouri Marriage Record on him with anyone named Lucinda or Lacinda and there is no Divorce Record that I have been able to locate either. I am at a brick wall. Thanks for any help.

Gene,

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! So much!! Even though I have been at this several years I still consider myself a beginner. I have several of the records you mention, Ill go pull them and come post them here and maybe we can track them down.

Ok, this is what I have thus far. I went back on Ancestry and did a complete search through their marriage records to see if I had overlooked a marriage record for Dorthula SMITH And William F EADS and this is what I found:

They only have Wayne Co. Mo Marriage Records from 1892-1989 So, if Charles
and Lucinda were married before then its not avaliable on Ancestry. I did a search
on Wayne County Gen web and noted there is a book of Wayne County Marriages
for the year that you suggested they may have gotten married in or at least within
a five year time span, so I may have some luck there if I can find someone who has
the book that would look it up for me.

According to Mo Wayne Co. Genweb:The Wayne County courthouse
burned in 1854. The records in the new courthouse were stolen in 1866
and in 1892 the courthouse burned again. As a result few official county
records prior to 1893 survive. In the Census of 1820, the large area of
Wayne County had a population of only 1,239 whites and 204 slaves,
but unfortunately the list of Head of Households has been lost as were
early local census records.

So...I do have the Marriage Record for Donia and Charles, and Dorthula and WM F EADS, I will upload it those here. I didnt gain anything from it. I am having trouble locating Charles and Lucinda`s Son, James A. SMITH. I have always "assumed" the A in his name probably stood for Alexander but wasnt certain. I did locate a Missouri Death Record for an "Andy Smith" who died in Wayne County, Missouri, 6 Sept 1945. The certificate states his fathers name was: Charlie SMITH. His mothers name is listed as: Unknown. He was born Oct. 18, 1873, Now, Dorthula was born in 1873 and I have a Birth Date for James A SMITH of 1877, which is just gleaned from the 1880 Census, no other records to support that fact. Darthula was born in Aug of 1873 so that fact would rule out this death certificate as being the James A SMITH I am looking for, also it is listed on this certificate that Andy SMITH was born in Indiana. But there are no Death Records in the Missouri Database for a James A SMITH or a James SMITH or Alexander SMITH, I dont know what the A stood for in his name. The informant on this certificate was listed as an Evelyn ALLEN from Malden, Dunklin, Missouri.

Now Charles Parents were: Alexander Wright "Dock" SMITH and Catherine E. WRIGHT. She was the daughter of Hubbard and Massey/Massa FORD- WRIGHT. They both were born in Tennessee. (Alexander and Catherine) I have seen several references to her online as Sara Catherine WRIGHT-SMITH, but I have only seen one Census with Alexander listed as having a wife named Sara, the rest refer to his wifes name as Catherine E.

But I am getting off track here. There just seems to be nothing turning up with this elusive James A SMITH. I am going to do some more digging in the mean time I am posting these records here and if you have any more ideas as to how to proceed I would appreciate hearing from you. lol
