Right now the one ancestor that is my HUGE BRICK WALL is John Thomas Jones from either Wales or London - as records show both. He married Jessie Hayes and emmigrated to Canada circa 1906. He was born Feb 1880 (one record states Middlesex England, and census records show Wales).

Any help is greatly appreciated......

I sure hope so. the chips keep falling off this wall - but not enough to allow a break through.

Hi Cheryl

I reckon John Jones must be the most common Welsh name over the last few centuries and the Thomas does not help much. I have several Jones families in my ancestry (including my mother's) and I'm getting used to tearing my hair out untangling them.

My feeling is that your John Thomas Jones was born in Denbighshire, North Wales. If his death certificate holds correct information, and he was registered by his parents within a month or so of his birth, there was only one John Thomas Jones born in the first quarter of 1880. On Free BMD, the entry is:

JONES John Thomas Ruthin District Vol 11b Page 314

In the 1881 census, he appears in the family of John Jones age 42 Gardener Domestic born Henllan along with mother Mary age 35 Gardeners Wife born Ysceifiog, Elizabeth age 14 Scholar born Henllan, Edwin Head Age 12 Scholar. John Thomas was born in Llanrhaiadr which is where the census was taken. These are all Denbighshire locations.

In 1891, the family is in St Asaph, Denbighshire where Mary is no longer with them (dead?) but another son Owen, born Holywell, Flintshire is aged 6. Edwin Head is recorded as Edward H.

In 1901, they are in Colwyn Bay on the North Wales coast where John Jones is shown as being 60 and a Gardener (not domestic). John Thomas is recorded as just J T Jones aged 21, a mason. Edwin H is a bricklayer and Owen a grocer's assistant. Elizabeth is not there, perhaps married. Birthplaces match.

Alan
I took a look at the 1911 census - the first to be filled in by someone in the household, rather than a census enumerator. John Jones signed it himself..

In 1911 John Jones gave his age as 72, occupation Gardener (on own account), birthplace Denbigh Henllan. He had acquired a new wife, Catherine (born Merioneth Corwen and had been married for 6 years. Edward Jones, son, was aged 27, employed as a bricklayer, birthplace Denbigh Henllan and still at home. All spoke Welsh and English. Interestingly, John Jones recorded 6 children, all alive, but none by Catherine. Address was 27 Rhiw Road, Colwyn Bay.

Thanks everyone for your help over the last few years on the John Jones family.  Unfortunately I have not been able to find any more information or clues since the last posting in 2009.  The only new information to report is that my father-in-law EDWARD JONES (1931-2012) went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, and thus goes any additional information that may have been gleaned.
