The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

To introduce myself, I am Helen Scarth, living in Ontario, a descendant of Murdoch McLeod (1825-1896) and his wife, Frances Simpson Munro (1833-1906), through their son, Alexander Neil McLeod (1868-1940).

I've been involved off and on in family history since the late 1970s with most of my ancestors living in Ontario so Manitoba genealogy is a new experience.

Murdoch McLeod is a brick wall so of course I'd be most grateful for any help with his parents or other children and offer my services for short look-ups or advice with Ontario genealogy.

Hi Helen~

Welcome to the forum!

I had a look and Frances Simpson Munro is on the list of Selkirk Settler descendants in the TLSARL database. Our records end with her son Alexander Neil's children, so, as genealogist of the association, I would be very interested in talking to you more about your family. We have more info on Frances Simpson Munro's ancestors, too.

You might be interested in chatting with Sam, our newest forum member, as the two of you are related - if you didn't know that all ready....

My membership list isn't up to date, so I don't know if you've recently joined TLSARL. If you have not, I would recommend that you do. This would give you some access to what is on our records. Annual membership is not pricey - $10 CDN. If you are interested, please visit our website www.lordselkirk.ca and send a message through the Contact Us form.

You also have Munroe relatives active in TLSARL, who may be able to tell you more about Frances' father.

I have nothing further on Murdoch McLeod, though. His death is registered in the Manitoba Vital Statistics. Check it out at http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca//Query.php. If you haven't got a copy of his death certificate (reg. no. 1896-002399), it might be well worth ordering. It may give his place of birth, from which you could tackle parish records. Land records in Manitoba might hold some information for you, too, if he was farming and received a land grant, for example.

I hope that gets you started, anyway. If you would like to talk further, you may contact me through the TLSARL site Contact Us form.
Thank you, Elizabeth, for your kind welcome and for the great leads. I look forward to checking them and contacting Sam. I've recently ordered Murdoch McLeod's death registration and have my fingers crossed that it provides enough information for follow-up.

Elizabeth,

I tried to contact you through the "Contact Us" form and received a 404 message, even with cookies turned on. Could you please send me your e-mail address - to circeattreadlesdotca so I can send you further information. Could you please send me the mailing address for TLSARL so I can send my membership fee. Thanks.

Helen
Should work now, Helen. Thank you for letting me know!
Just an aside, it looks like your ancestress and Fort Frances Ontario were named after the same woman! That's kind of a fun fact for the family history book!
I was reluctant to go into detail about the name Simpson until I looked it up. I knew a George Simpson was in charge at the Red River Settlement, but I did not remember the dates he was there. The most recent reference to him that I've seen was in regards to the Columbia Department of Hudson's Bay Company, out here in the Oregon Territory, which is why I remembered him when I saw your message. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Simpson_(administrator). Interestingly, his second wife was Frances, so she was Frances Simpson. Maybe she was particularly helpful to your ancestors so they named their daughter after her. An interesting question, anyway.
George Simpson sounds like he had a very interesting personal life. Thank you for the link. It's an accumulation of links like this that allow us to eventually connect our ancestors. Frances Simpson Munro was the fourth of seven children born to George Munro and Anne Matheson so your explanation of the origin of her middle name does make sense.

Helen
Do you have George Munro's parents' names? I found a marriage record, 1793 or 1794 I think it was, for a George Munro and Christy Polson. I did not find George's birth record, though. It is not on any of the pages my cousin printed from the microfilm.
Wrong George, I think, Edith. What parish are you looking at?
