The Cox line that I am most interested in is actually not my direct line. My great-great-grandmother's stepfather was a Cox and she had four younger Cox half-siblings. I would like to find out about them, and also would like to find out more about their mother.

Here is the information I have on that family:

Mary (maiden name unknown), born about 1838-1842 in Ireland

married Dyer (first name unknown), born in Ireland

children:

Mary E. Dyer (also known as Mollie), born about 1860 or 1863 in Kentucky or Louisiana

Sarah Claire Dyer (my great-great-grandmother, also known as Sadie), born 8 October 1863 in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee, died 20 January 1945 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois

Michael Dyer, born about 1868 or 1869 in Tennessee

The children's father had died by 1870.

Mary remarried John Cox (born in England, died before the 1880 census) on 10 April 1871 in Davidson County, Tennessee.

children:

Nannie Cox, born about 1873 in Tennessee

Thomas Cox, born about 1874 in Tennessee

Willie Cox, born about 1877 in Tennessee

Nellie Cox, born about 1878 in Tennessee


Since the family is living in Nashville in 1870 and 1880 and that is where my great-great-grandmother was born, the other children born in Tennessee were probably born there too. I don't know what happened to my great-great-grandmother's mother and siblings after 1880. Someone posted a family tree on ancestry.com which said that Nannie B. Cox, born about 1873 in Tennessee, the daughter of John Cox and Mary Dyer, married George B. Richardson and lived in Rienzi, Alcorn, Mississippi. I looked into this and although there were many similarities to my family, some things didn't quite add up. I kept looking into it and eventually found out that this Nannie Cox was not my great-grandmother's half-sister. I think someone put the wrong parents on the family tree; the parents of the Nannie Cox on the family tree were apparently Emily Kessler and William Darling Cox, both born in Mississippi. Nannie Cox seems to have been a very common name.

I also have Cox ancestors in my direct line, much further back. Hannah Cox was born in 1691 in Virginia and died 1 June 1765 in Caroline, Virginia. She married Henry Isbell (born in 1690 in Virginia and died in 1760 in Caroline, Virginia). Hannah's parents were James Cox (born 1674 in Cornwall, England and died 16 December 1738 in Orange, Virginia) and Elizabeth Hannah Cary (born 1 June 1672 in Virginia and died 1 June 1745 in Orange, Virginia). James Cox's parents were Christopher Cock (born 14 December 1643 in Helston, Cornwall, England and died in 1716 in Prince William, Virginia) and Grace Bolitho (born 1655 in Wendron, Cornwall, England and died in 1720 in Virginia). Christopher's parents were Thomas Cocke (born 1616 in Cornwall, England and died in Luxulyan, Cornwall, England) and Mary Pearce (born 1621 in Cornwall, England). Thomas's parents were Thomas Cocke (born in 1587 in Cornwall, England) and Ann Phillip (born in 1590 in Cornwall, England). I don't actually have documentation for any of this line.

Beth,
There is not a whole lot of information on TN Cox families and I did not find the names you mention, sorry.
On your other line, I found a few that might be possibilities, but they don't match exactly.
There is a Christopher Cox, who was a brother to James and Thomas. It does not mention who Christopher married or dates, but Christopher had a son, James.

Beth, you and I have the same Cox line, and the same situation...not documented. Where you descend from Hannah, I am through her brother, William. That according to the Cox trees I've found. My paternal grandmother was a Cox. Maybe we can get together and find some documentation, or the people who already have the documentation. Somebody apparently did a lot of work. We just need to find the source. Anybody else on here have a thought?

Hi Beth,

Finding birth records in Kentucky at that time (mid 19th century) has been near impossible for me because it wasn't a state requirement until about 1878. While researching a great-great-grandfather (not a Cox, but a Pegram) born in Owensboro in 1842, I was able to get copies of the 1850 census and 1860 census from the Kentucky Historical Society.

I'm stuck on Joseph Cox bn abt 1823 in Tennessee, married Elizabeth 1836-1924(bn in MO). He may have been married before. Most of the children were born in MO, but Harry and Curd's mother is from TN on at least one census. Alice is my husband's great grandmother and his direct maternal ancestor.

Children of Joseph and Elizabeth:

Harry B. Cox 1850, Curd Cox 1861, Andrew Cox 1870, James W Cox 1871, Alice Cox Hasty 1874 – 1948, Frank Cox 1876, and Emma Cox Ewing 1878-1972

I'm hoping some of these names might look familiar to somebody; especially Curd. It's an unusual name, but there seem to be few of them. I found a family in TN that had Curds in it, but the dates just aren't right. We're actually very interested in finding Elizabeth's last name. We're attempting to trace the maternal lineage since my husband was an only child, and because he has a rare dna type (X). We don't want it to be lost forever. Being a mom myself, seeing all these poor old moms with no last names makes me kind of sad!

Elizabeth Cox was buried in Tuttle, OK.

Harriet Jane Cox (or Jane Harriet Cox), born about 1851 in Bath, New Brunswick, died November 1, 1880, married Timothy Lynch (Irish born in Germany).

Ok, so some more digging and I found the following:

My great-great-grandmother Harriet Jane Cox, who was born in Bath, New Brunswick, Canada (b. 1851, d. 1880), was the granddaughter of John Cox, who was born in West Jersey, New Jersey in 1756, and he moved to New Brunswick in 1783 as a loyalist to the British crown (as did so many other loyalists at that time). Would anyone here know of any further ancestry to John Cox?

I am from (supposedly) John Cox/Margaret Morris (Piscataway, NJ to Lincoln County, NC);  Rebecca Cox/Absalom Bonham from NJ to PA to Lincoln County, NC.  I'd like to get a bead on Margaret Morris's parents.  I'm not convinced her brother/father was Robert Morris (the DI signer).  :-)  It's complicated.  I've had my DNA done.

Martha Cox 1890-1982 Taylor Co Kentucky ( My grandmother)

George Washington Cox 1855 -1940  Taylor County Kentucky (great grandfather)

Thomas (Littleberry) Cox 1837- 1914 Green County Kentucky

Caleb Cox  1802 - 1855  Virginia

Littleberry Cox  1774 -1850

and on and on....

I am from a southern line of Cox's...my line goes back thru John Memory...Julius Washington...Heniard Cox...Benjamin Jr. and Benjamin Sr. born 1740

I am back to doing genealogy research after having to take a break of several years because I just didn't have time to spend on it. I'm starting with my Cox line and have come upon an interesting book online called The Cox Family in America that gives a lot of history on the several Coxes that came to America from England, Sweden, Holland, Scotland to name some. And even includes early genealogies for many of them. From what I understand Coxes from these different lines spread far and wide across America. Since certain names were so common in different lines (like Isaac, Thomas, Wm), I still haven't connected my Isaac to which one he may have descended from. What I do know is that his folks migrated from Greene Co, PA over to the area of Tyler Co., WV by 1850 when he shows up on the census there. From what I have gathered he was born about 1795 in PA and married Mary Wise, probably also from PA and probably married they were married in PA but I haven't found a marriage certificate.

What I have come to seriously question is that my Isaac was the son of Michael and Jeruthea (Brooks) Cox in Ohio Co, VA(WV). I see a number of folks have put them on their trees as being his parents, but the more I dig the more I doubt this. They did have a son named Isaac, BUT his place of death is different than my Isaac, who I know to have died in Pleasants Co, WV. Which is in keeping with him living in Tyler Co, WV in 1850 and I believe Pleasants Co was created from parts of other counties, including Tyler. Having grown up in Pleasants Co and living in the same area where my grand and great-grandparents had lived for years I know which is my Isaac in WV.
