David Pate & Susan Mary Lassiter

I have found some info from the Pate List Archives:

A 1998 posting:

I recently obtained a copy of a Lassiter family manuscript. One of the families listed is that of Susan Mary Lassiter, born 23 Sept. 1837, in Bedford Co., Tennessee; married in Carroll County, Arkansas about 1857 to David Pate (sometimes called Sam.) He was 10 to 15 years older than she. They later moved to California. I have some additional information, children, etc. If this information would be helpful to you, please let me know.

Because Susan Mary Lassiter's daughter's description of her mother's life (including married to David Pate) has been on and off the web when I've tried to look for it, I finally tossed a copy up onto my own web site:

In particular, I added some personal notes at the bottom, including that the expanded account on familytreemaker.com muddies some of my childhood info, that given their circumstances and a house fire, the high chair in my kitchen, which I'd always been told "came around the horn in a sailing vessel" after David Pate made it, probably didn't. I wonder if anyone here knows enough about David Pate's family to say where the chair might have come from. I linked it from that page, but it's also here:

I welcome any other information or contact from that family, as well as more of David's background (I knew he'd come from Illinois, but not of Virginia before that). Susan Mary's is pretty well documented in Lassiter (with multiple spellings) history to before the family's arrival in Virginia in the late 1600s.

On Friday I posted the names of Susan Mary and David Pate's children, with some dates, places, etc. to the Pate-L. This is all the information I have on this family. Here is a repeat of that posting:

 

My information comes from "The Lassiter Family" by Laura Sarratt, found in the Franklin County Library, Franklin Co., TN. It is not a published book, but a 15-page article, dated March 13, 1982. Below is all the Pate information included. I am copying directly from the article and do not have any additional information about this family, except Lassiter ancestry:

5. Susan Mary

Susan Mary Lassiter Pate Born: 23 Sept. 1837, Bedford Co., Tenn. (probably at Rowsville, a little hamlet outside (east) of Shelbyville where Nicholas owned property and seemed to live then. Married in Carroll Co., Arkansas about 1857 to David Pate (sometimes called Sam.) He was 10 to 15 years older than she. He came to Arkansas to visit relatives which were no doubt the Cheney or Chaney family who also lived in Osage Township, Carroll Co., Ark. Later in Calif. David & Susan met up with some Cheneys (his relatives) in Lake Co.,Calif. Susan died: 17 March 1918, Paso Robles, Calif. (San Luis Obispo Co.).

 

Children of Susan Mary and David Pate:

 

1. Albert probably died in 1858, a few weeks old. Is supposed to have died in Louisiana, but in 1858 Susan & David were living in Drew County, Arkansas, which is just above the Louisiana Border, so perhaps he died there if David went down to look for work, or perhaps he died in Drew Co.

 

2. Laura Amanda Pate--this is my grandmother. Her tombstone says she was born in 1858, but this does not jive with the fact that Susan & David sold out in Drew Co. in Aug. of 1858 and supposedly left right after that for Calif. Unless they sold by proxy, which is not stated in the deed. The story goes Susan was pregnant with Grandma when she arrived in California & Laura was born in Fairfield (near Benicia) 14 June 1859. (Even Laura's death certificate says 1858, so we can't be sure.) (So does the Young Bible in possession of my older sister, and Laura was probably pretty young when those notes were made.) Laura married Francis Young in Dec. 1875 in San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. She died 13 July 1946 in Paradise Calif., and is buried in Madronia Cemetery, Saratoga, Calif.

 

3. Joel Pate b. 3 July 1861, Suisun, Calif., d. 16 Feb. 1931, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif.

 

4. Emma Pate b. 1864, died at 18 months in Tulare Co., Calif.

 

5. May Pate b. 1866 (mar. Gillis)

 

6. Robert Lee Pate b. 4 Dec 1868 d. 26 Nov. 1948, SLO County, Calif.

 

7. Grace b. 1 Feb. 1872, Templeton, Calif., d. 16 Oct. 1963, Paso Robles, SLO Co., Calif. Mar. R. C. Heaton.

 

There are many conjectures about the death of David Pate, but he is supposed to have gone to Oregon in 1877 looking for a new place to live and was killed by Indians.
