I'm researching the Heefner line, which apparently is a misspelling of "Haffer". Here is what I have so far, from my earliest known direct male ancestor to the latest I wish to share:

John HAFFER - (Abt.1755-1828)
Conrad HEEFNER - (1798-1870)
James HEEFNER - (1834-1899)
John F. HEEFNER - (1875-????)
John Emmert HEEFNER - (1896-1965)

All were born if Franklin county, PA, as far as I know, and most are from Quincy Township.

I'm looking to confirm and expand my research, I can not get past John HAFFER and I'm still not sure if that is the correct spelling or if his parents may have had a different surname. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you for your time, Wayne.

"Heefner, John County/DAUPHIN YoB/1858 Age/72" - I have a John C. Heefner with a calculated DOB of 1858, but how is one to be certain that they are one and the same?

"Heefner, John F FRANKLIN 1876 54"
- I have a John F Heefner born Jun 1 1875.

"Heefner, John C FRANKLIN 1878 52" Can't find a match, but I have information I still need to enter.

"Also found this:
A Maria Kauffner Married a John Heefner on Dec 1 1874 then migrated to Texas"
- I have her name listed as Maria KAUFMAN. That is certainly the John F. Heefner I have listed as he did move to Tx.

I can't match any of the other info to people I already have, but I still have some people to enter and I will check again after that. I have 1850 & 1880 Pa Census info, available Here:

I also found a lot of info here:

The problem is I don't know how to go about confirming the info and I can't get past John HAFFER. I was hoping to find someone that may have already don some research on this family. I actually read a post about just that on the ancestry.com forum from someone going by the screen name "cheryllreed", but I can't contact her because I do not have a paid account there. I google some variation of that screen name and it lead me here. Here is what she posted:

"a sample....

John HAFNER
“Born 1728, 13th day (parents were John and Elizabeth HEFNER he mar. Barbara Metzger, Nov. 16, 1748 and begat 4 sons and 6 daus., died Dec. 30, 1791. Maria Catherina HEEFNERIN b. 1733, Jan. 23, her father was George KING and her mother Maria KING. She mar. Albertus HEEFNER 1755.” “Anna Maria HUFNERIN 1769-1790.” Albertus HEEFNER left a will dated 1804 and prob. 1809, naming wife Barbara who was to have the privilege of the new dwelling house I know live in, and her dower; the heirs were John HEEFNER, Jacob Valentine; Margaret; Elizabeth; Peter; Conrad; Catherine; Susanna.

Records of Jacob’s Lutheran Church S. of Waynesboro, Penna."

I can't make heads or tails out of it and some of it seems to contradict my findings.

Thank you for the info, pleas let me know if you come across something else.

John
I have just found something of interest for you at this address:

http://www.gencircles.com/globaltree/search/

put the names you want ie: heefner - haffer etc in with christian name

there is one with maria and john whilst
in that site try all possible searches

Wayne
Looks promising, I'll check it out and let you know what I find.

Thanks,
John
Well, I got quite a bit of information there, mainly on the the families of spouses. It's to the point now that I end up going off on a tangent that has almost nothing to do with the HEEFNER/HAFFER/HEFFNER/HAFFNER/HAEFNER line. There are also so many spellings for my surname that it makes searching for specific individuals a hassle. You would have to search 6 times to be thorough. Anyway, thank you for the link! I still have a considerable amount of info to add from there.

BTW; I've gotten further than John HAFFER now. His father was Albertus HEIFFNER/ HIFFNER/HEFFNER and his grandfather was HAFFNER/HAEFNER. Both were born in Germany.

John
I am going to confuse it even more
Ive just been into LDS familySearch.org typed all names with different spelling, very interesting

Then whilst in there 2nd from left Search record when that drops down click search pilot
then type in Albertus HEEFNER, type germany, and click & partial matches
all hell breaks loose on name variation Try it and let me know what you think

Wayne
I have quite a few people now(300+) and a good portion of them came from familysearch.com, I'm sorry, I should have told you where I've already searched and been more spcific about what info I already have. I certainly don't want to waste your time. I have not tried alternate spellings yet and I have not tried searching for Albertus. That will be my next step. Using the the "smart match" feature in Family Tree Builder, I have a lead on Albertus' parents, I think their names are John & Elizabeth HAFFNER/HAEFNER. I wonder how far back I can get. You've been a VERY big help, thank you! I'll let you know what I find.

John
Thanks John
Keep at it and yes I would like very much to know how you are going and progressing in your quest and any time you need a bit more help yell out as i'm always here to help but in the mean time I might scout through some german sites I know of

Wayne
I' am also researching the Heefner side. My Great x 3 Grandmother was a Heefner. Her name was Eliza "Elizabeth" Heefner born: 30 Dec 1828, d: 20 Aug 1883 Franklin Co., She married John Shaffer. I am stuck finding her parents or his parents. They resided in Quincy Franklin Co., from 1850's to the 1880's. Their Children's names were Susan, John F, George, Jeremiah "Jerry" and Mary Ellen (my great x 2 grandmother. Coould you please check and see if she is somewhere in your I would greatly appreciated it thank you

Shonda
I do have an "Eliza Heefner" in my tree, estimated to have been born in 1829. I have here living with her parents in 1850. I can't confirm that this is the Eliza that you are looking for, but it's pretty likely. Here is the 1850 Census transcript, please note that "Conrod" is misspelling of "Conrad":

1850 Census:

[page 421]

269/301
Conrod HEEFNER, 52, Farmer, $2,100, Penna.
Sarah, 58
Susannah, 26
Samuel, 24, Laborer
Eliza, 21
Levi, 18, Laborer
James, 15, Laborer

I believe I have traced Conrad's paternal line further back, feel free to send me an email if you wish to discus this any further.
I found that also but then I found her with her husband John in 1850 with their daughter Susan who was born approximately in 1849. The 1850 Census was in Quincy Franklin Co. For Eliza I found on Familysearch.org and Ancestry.com Family tree that she was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery Mont alto Franklin Co., PA, I cannot find this cemetery anywhere to even try and contact them.
Shonda,
Did you get info on Rose Hill? It isn't called Rose Hill anymore it is called Mont Alto Cemetery. It is on old Mont Alto road which runs between 997 and Rout 30. I am assuming you are not from or near the area. I was just at the cemetery yesterday and did not see any phone numbers for them. I have photos of some of the Heefner graves from there and from Quincy Cemetery. I would be glad to look for any for you next time I am out that way just tell me who you are looking for. There are a lot of old tombstones there and many of them are unfortunately to the point of not being able to distinguish anything that was once on them. Quincy Cemetery (alot of Heefners there) is even worse, there are many stones down. It is really sad.
