I am looking for Mariah Taylor and her son Joseph/Joe in the 1870 and 1880 Harrison County Texas census. I have found Mariah and her husband Lawrence in the 1900 and 1910 census.  I use the last name Taylor for the 1870 and 1880 census because Lawrence is actually the Foster father of Joseph and he carries his name. Oral history has Joseph being raised by lawrence starting at a very early age. ( I do not discount that Joseph may have still been a Taylor by birth because there were several in that town) . I have no knowlede of Mariah's maiden name.. If I could only  find them in the same household either as a two person or three person household.

The 1900 census has Lawrence (SC) Mariah (TX). She is stating she has one child and that child is living.  You can see Joseph her son and family living several houses up.

In the 1910 census you will see Mariah (TX) and Lawrence(SC) again. She is still saying that she has one child and that child is living. Joseph and family are still several houses ahead.

In 1920 I see a Lawrence Taylor widow. No sign of Mariah. Which leaves me to believe she was deceased btw 1910 and 1920. I have been unable to find a death certificate for either Mariah or Lawrence. I do have a DC for son Joseph but the informant was a doctor and he had no knowledge of the parents names.

I believe Mariah was born btw 1845-54 and Joseph 1865-1867.

I have looked and looked at all the Mariah's/Maria over and over and still cannot get a clue..

Hi Vicky- In 1900 I notice the Joseph on the same page as Mariah is only 10 years younger than Mariah, does this sound right? Is it possible that Joseph is a brother, not a son to Mariah?
Hi Kate, thanks for responding. I looked at the ages also on the 1900 census. I know it may not be uncommon in that day and time for a young girl to become a mother. I truly believe that Mariah may have been born around 1845 instead of 1854. In the 1910 census Joseph aka JP was seen as 43 and Mariah aka Maria was listed as 60.
Mariah is according to oral history Joseph's mother and before my grandmother passed away she stated the same thing.
Were they in Harrison County, in 1910? I just can't seem to find them- I checked for Mariah and Lawrence on the Texas death records on the FamilySearch Pilot site with no luck, where was Joseph buried? could they be in the same cemetery?
They are listed in 1910 Kate, but Mariah is Maria. There is also a Ben Taylor in the household. Her son is several houses above listed as JP. with wife Frances and children. I have not been able to find a DC for either of them. I have tried unsuccesfully to get the church cemetery records to see if they have a listing of burials. Those records were sadly kept at the church sec'y's home and he is deceased and records may hve been thown out. I do know that Joseph and Wife are buried at the St, Johns Cemetery in Marshall Texas. There is a page in a library book that has a few names listed of folks buried there. This lists sadly states Mr and Mrs Lawrence Taylor, nothing else. I believe this is them but no way to actually verify it. I visited the cemetery last year and found Joseph and wife Frances headstones but nothing for Mariah or Lawrence.
There really should have been a DC for them because Texas started keeping records in 1903 I think.
listed below is the Ancestry Source

Hi Vicky-

I'm going to attach the 1910 census, so that we can have it as a reference. I note that Ban is listed as a nephew, I'm assuming of Lawrence. But maybe we can trace Ben' s family and come up with something?
