I'm stuck at the 8th generation of my lineage. I'd love to find out who is this "Nancy". In the Pierce copy of the Batchelder genealogy, her surname isn't listed. I know that Jonathan now died insane, and his children were adopted by "Nancy" (well, she was given guardianship of the chidren) but the paperwork doesn't list her maiden name either. It's a sad story, but somewhere out there there must be a marriage record! A will? A deed? Help!

Benjamin Batchelder (1764-1838) lived in Poultney, Vt and was married to a Polly? about 1790. I believe he came from New Hampshire, as daughter Mary's 1880 census record says her parents were from New Hampshire.
He had at least five children. Most of them died quite young.
Daughter Lucinda (1798-1824) married Marquis de Lafayette Hooker in Poultney Vermont. Two daughters survived. One of these is my 2x great grandmother, Mary Jeannette Hooker.
Son William (1794-1828) may have been married as a Daniel is buried near him.
Daughter Rebecca (1800-1877) was married first to Stukley Thornton and then James H. Porter. She had three surviving daughters.
Daughter Mary (1804-1894) married James Winchell. Only one daughter survived to adulthood.
Son Daniel (1811-1838) married Esther Wetmore. They had one son, William N Bachelder, the only child to carry on the Batchelder name. William had a large family in Colorado and Montana.
Who are the parents of Benjamin Batchelder? I've been looking but nothing is clear. Pierce's book says
"232. BENJAMIN BACHELDER (Samuel, John, John, John), b. Claremont,
N. H., 1765; m. Poultney, Vt., Polly Newton, b. 1771. She d. age. seventy Aug. 5,
1841. He d. Sept. 15, 1839. Res. Poultney, Vt."
The revised version of this book leaves this family out completely.
I have a brick wall on Mahala Batchelder. She was born 1800? (or 1806) in New Hampshire? and was the second wife of John Hanson born 1796 in New Hampshire. They had 13 children. The story is that Hanson was married first to Mahala's sister Olive (1794-1824), but no proof they are sisters. Mahala died in 1894 in Corinth, Orange, Vermont. Another researcher has found a gravestone in Center Harbor of an Olive Batchelder, wife of John Hanson, died 1824, buried beside a John Batchelder.
