Watts
I have an ancestor of my wife's called George Watts. Some sources say he was from Devon but not sure. George married Henrietta Mackinnon in St Mary Arches Church, Exeter on 25th June 1798. On his marriage certificate it states he was surgeon to a regiment of Dragoon Guards.
George was a in fact a vet in the army and he later became a leading vet, horse owner and trainer in Ireland. He became known as "The Father of the Turf" in Ireland and was one of the first vets in Ireland to hold a formal qualificaion from the Royal College in London.
Looking for advice. I have looked at army records in Kew but there is nothing there to indicate where he was from.

Brian,
There was a George Lazarus Watts, b. 29 July 1775 and bap. 21 August 1775, Batter Street Presbyterian, Plymouth, Devon. Might be your man if he switched to the Church of England for his marriage.
Alternatively, there are:
George Watts, bap. 2 Dec 1781, Ashford by Barstaple, Devon
George Watts, bap. August 1784, Holsworthy, Devon
Those are the only George's I found in Devon.

Thanks. He was just known as George and the tradition of naming the eldest son George continued for about four generations after that. Lazarus was never used.

I have Watts but no location. Does Samuel Watts sound familiar? He married Elizabeth Ayer.

Samuel is not a name that featured. John and Arthur and George were the main names used. Thanks for the interest.
