I am trying to find information on Engravers,Stencil Makers, Print shops, Moulders, in the City of San Francisco, CA. In the mid 1800's. My Great Grandfather, worked there with his wife's uncle name unknown who originally owned it . Then he took over the business, and named it S.O. Holmes & Co. bus. established in 1856 at 505 Washington st. my Great Grandfather was Samuel Oliver Holmes, His sons worked at the shop too. My Grand Father, George Holmes (son of Samuel) ended up passing on the business to my Father, George T. Holmes, who ran it with his brother Elmer, My Dad bought his brother Elmer's half, and continued until the building of the Transamerica bld went up. he sold the business and retired. Samuel's wife's maiden name was Nesensohn, but I don't know her uncle's name, only that he owned the business originally. They were from Germany, and it was told of someone who brought the vulcanizing process to the States. Another story I was told by my parents, was George (Grandfather) was involved in the the Mechanics Statue in the city, and helped with the memorial to the Donner Party. Could someone steer me in the right direction of where to start my search?
