Clayton: Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire

I have just completed (after 10 years research) my branch of the Clayton family who lived in Ashton-Under-Lyne Lancashire, Hyde Cheshire, and our origins in Whalley near what is now Blackburn in Lancashire. At present I live in South Australia. Where do we start>

Hello, William! Thanks for your reply about where to start. I have uploaded a .pdf file of the earliest CLAYTON ancestor in my tree, Samuel Clayton. He was born in Lancashire on 5 Dec 1795 and died in Noble County, Ohio, USA on 27 Jan 1860. He married Mary ??? in England. They had ten children, all christened in Ashton-under-Lyne. Henry Clayton's daughter Alice was married to Franklin Collins STUART and was my great grandmother. Samuel moved his large family to the US about 1842. I have a copy of the passenger list.

Perhaps there is some linkage to your research, an unknown Samuel in your tree that matches my information?

Hi Stephen
Please allow me to do a little research on this one as we may have a different part of the Clayton family in our trees.It is a bit confusing since there are too many ancestors with the names of Samuel,George,and William to name a few. Records I hold for my branch of the Clayton family of Ashton-Under-Lyne for the time period you mention include a Daniel born in 1797, and a James born 1799. The earliest record I have of a Samuel is for a birth on 7th September 1658 in Ashton-u-Lyne. Father was John Clayton married to Margaret Bush on 1st October 1651 in St Michaels Church Ashton-U-Lyne..I have no record of any of my relatives moving to the USA
There should be a common link somewhere, but I believe we have different branches. I have gone back as far as I can on my tree which is 1518 with an Alexander born in Whalley Lancashire,cant get an exact date of birth since the old Julian calendar was still in effect,and Henry 8th did no one any favours by dissolving the monasteries

Thanks for checking your research for me. Are there church records available from Ashton-under-Lyne that I can search? I have used the local LDS Family History Center to get access to genealogy records but haven't tried them for this.

There are church records available for St Michael and All Saints church in Ashton-Under-Lyne.T his is the church where all the Claytons I have traced from the township were Married. Some records are on the LDS, but try the web site ukchurch records.com,and go through the Lancashire list.

Bit long winded for a web address but it will help you.

Have done a trace backwards and none of the people you have mentioned so far appear( but I wont give up ).At present it does appear that we have differnt branches of the Clayton Family living in Ashton.This is not uncommon since there are also Claytons living in the same town as Myself here in South Australia yet not related.
I did discover that the Clayton family was originally mainly in the county of Lancashire and around 1540 (reason unknown ) they started to live in other counties in the United Kingdom, these included Cheshire, Staffordshire, Yorkshire, and Sussex..
I did discover that a William Clayton who is regarded as the founder of the American branch of the family left his home in Rudgwick Sussex in March1677 aboard the ship Kent for the colonies (now the USA) and became a commisioner for William Penn.

Hi,

 

I hope you don't mind me posting this but I'm selling a job lot of photos retaining to a Clayton Family from Cheshire (1930's) that include a receipt to a Kathleen Clayton. I would rather the photos went to family rather than just anyone.  There are 270 negatives and 61 photos.  I bought them about 3 years ago at a car boot sale hoping to find the time to develope the negatives but never got around to it.

My family came from Wales, England. My 10th grandfather was Richard Clayton- 1646-1704 and he moved to Pennsylvania.. I just trying to find out family Information.
