Hi everyone - my oldest brickwall - the one I've been unable to solve for the longest time is my great grandmother's step-father (or maybe father), George Jones.
My great-grandmother, Alice Jones was registered at birth as Alice Peck b. Surry Hills NSW 29 April 1886 (Sunday - when did they start/stop putting that on birth certs?) to Emily Bertha Eliza Peck 18 years also born Surry Hills Not married, no father's name registered. Informant is Emily Peck, Mother, Waverley Road, Waverley (which makes me think Alice was born at her grandmother's home in Surry Hills.
Emily Bertha Peck married George Jones at St Peters Church, Cook's River Road St Peters NSW on 16 March 1895. He was 34 and she was 36. His birthplace is listed as Melbourne, his parent William Jones and Ann Griffiths father's occupation cabinet maker. George's occupation was horse trainer. Witnesses were Emily's brother and sister - John M Peck and Alice Maude Foulston.
George died in Kalgoorlie on 21 December 1946 at 51 Ward Street Kalgoorlie. Informant was the undertaker. George's place of birth was listed as Unknown Tasmania, and he was listed as 50 years in Tasmania and 38 years in Western Australia.
he was 88 years old when he died, still a horse trainer and his only child listed was Alice 60 years.
parents are unknown. It says he was 28 years old when he married Emily.
When I asked my great aunt, Alice's daughter about her birth certificate, she did not seem surprised, but said 'some skeletons are best left in the closet' and would tell me nothing more about Alice or George. Except she said that Alice always considered him her father or words to that effect.
I searched years ago for a birth entry for George. It doesnt help that his name is george jones. I found an unnamed male child born to William Jones and Ann in Victoria in 1860 (reg 00041/1860) and an unnamed Jones boy born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1856 (Reg#914/1856) to William Jones Tinman & Brazier and Hannah Jones formerly Brown and another to the same parents on July 26 1858 (1737/1858).

There is no mention of living in Sydney/NSW on George's death certificate although I know he was living there - when he married Emily and there is a semi-famous Melbourne Cup story about a horse called Robinson Crusoe, that was rescued by a young strapper (George Jones) when the ship they were travelling on to bring horses to the Melbourne Cup ran aground or sank. Robinson Crusoe went on to race in the Cup.

George's birthday was always celebrated on 28 July.
Any help to find out a bit more about old Georgie would be much appreciated.

Boy oh Boy you really have a sort out on your hands ( and twice at that no matter we've all been through that faze)

Well documented info which should help those that are a little more experienced in locating someone.
I will do some snooping as well to see what I can find you just never know.

In the mean time just be patient and I'm sure some one will be able to help you with your mystery.

Hello Everyone,

I am hoping that someone may be able to help me with my brick wall :(  I am trying to find out information on my 3xg grandfather David Kennedy who, it appears was born in Ireland around 1800(?) He married Catherine McLeish in Gargunnock Scotland on 11 May 1822. They had 8 children, all born Gargunnock, John (1823) Margaret (1825) Elisabeth (1828) Cathrine (1834) James (1837) William (1839) Janet (1842) Isabella Taylor (1844).

David is shown on the 1841 census shows his occupation as a Drainer and that he was born in Ireland.

There is where it all comes undone!! I can't find any information on him in Ireland, because I don't really know where to look, I have no idea of his parents or which part of Ireland they are from.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Some sites that don't cost the earth to use and are user friendly??

Hi Chris I found the David also, in the 1841 census too, but only on the " Free Census" site and not the others seems a bit odd.

Hi Wayne,

Thank you for taking the time to look this up and reply. I have had a fair bit of success with the Scottish side, it was nice to find Isabella (I haven't researched her as yet).

I have never been able to find David and Catherine's death or burial records, I would imagine she would have been in her her 40's when Isabella was born as there was 21 years between her first and last born.

I always refer to them as the "elusive" Kennedy's!

Research in Ireland? Well that may have to wait for my retirement and a lot of spare time on my hands!!
