Ancestry.com - too expensive?

I turned mine off for a while but since I hit this brick wall on Jesse I turned it back on just to be able to merge into trees with pics and info that I may not have - even from the web

There are quite a few web resources out their where you can find existing trees on many, many names.  Of course,

sorting through the false leads and duplicate errors is an ongoing task, but I come across quite a few European based sites that have been helpful (free of charge).  The name is on my laptop in another room so I will try to post it later.

 

Brick walls there are a many.....there is quite a bit of confusion regarding Allwein, Alwijn, Alewien, Alwin etc...are they in your tree as well?

Hi yas, yeah, I find that I have more bookmarks to sites and references than I got good answers, like you pointed out once in a small book you found - people are wrong a lot, back in the 'day' as well as recent, on websites, ancestry - the whole nine. I have found that I have to go back over the documentation several times before I find information that pans out - that actually matches hard evidence and tombstones for example. The biggest reason I do ancestry is because it's a good place for me to check myself AND to merge with trees that are based on fact, I can also delete a set of 'parents' and move on, kinda double checks myself - on top of THAT - they prolly ain't going no where, I'm sure they have backup servers, so I don't have to worry about my computer or a server that gets hit by natural disaster or just flat out wears out.

Honestly --- there's 2 dang many, stories and information all over the place, individual blogs and sites so far apart that it is hard to paint a good picture - so I use my ancestry site for that as well. The only thing I really fault ancestry for is the way they do their message boards - so information stops and starts and gets so cluttered it's hard to find a thing - one reason I started here, cause it's fresh and not so cluttered. I haven't worried about going back accross the seas so much cause I've got one big BRICK wall on Jesse Orenduff. I have researched don't get me wrong - on a lot of lines going back, but I stopped at the US and I am filling in everything here first - double checking and all that - if something was to happen to me - suddenly - the ancestry tree is still there - and will be there even if die or my computer does. As far as names? yes, almost all ancestors changed their names once they hit this continent. Orenduff is spelled so many ways - and documents sometimes are spelled ways that tombstones and other records never record.  - but if yo do post some good sites - i'm sure I'll get to em someday - and welcome them - and thank you :)

After completing the profile and names interested in you get email alerts with news on the names...for example:

OHRNDORF 1 Result(s)
ORENDORFF 2 Result(s)

 

You click on the Results column and it takes you to the researcher.  Clicking on the "tree" icon takes you to their page where some info is displayed and you can send them a message.  Clicking on the name takes you to their tree.

 

Another research tool to add to your collection.
