I get an error message when trying to sync the two trees. The message reads: "The last sync failed. An error occurred while "Analyzing changes from Family Tree Maker." You may want to restart FTM and try again later." Restarting FTM and/or shutting down computer don't solve the issue.

My only activity in FTM was to change the case of the surnames of cousins and ancestors by marriage (leaving only direct line in CAPS). I did the change both individually and by using the Find and Replace function when there were a number of surnames.

My Question: is there a way to determine where the error is? The syncing stops at the same spot every time.

Hi again Russ,

I see an announcement from DuffW Sr. Product Manager, FTM at

http://ancestryforums.custhelp.com/posts/2d1e415f54 that FTM acknowledge a sync problem and are working on a patch.

That was on 3 October but I am still getting the help service pursuing the old question and answer and experimentation line, the latest in an email received today.

Oh, I wish they would get their collective act together!

John,

Did you see my Blog post on this topic?

Russ, thanks for all your comments. Since I created my new tree to replace the one that wouldn't sync, I've had no problems. I attribute this to always Compacting before I start working on the tree (with Backup checked), and then syncing periodically during my work session.

I tend to make my changes in Ancestry rather than FTM. Let me ask you a question: I've found that when I delete an individual in Ancestry, the deletion doesn't carry over to FTM. Should I be making the deletion in FTM first?

Cecily,

I do my work in FTM2014, mostly.

Good practice to Compact, Back Up then Sync

When you make a change in Ancestry, do the Sync, What does the Plan Workspace say about the sync status?

Russ

Sync status is 'in-sync'

Cecily,

I saw once, that when I made a change in AMT, I did the Sync, but then after FTM2014 was updated, I had to do another Sync, but then I was ok.

Russ

Don't quite understand your reply. Are you saying that you made the same change in FTM2014 (as you did in AMT) or a different change?

No. I made a change in the AMT, did the Sync in FTM2014, but noticed that I had to do another sync. Reason: the Sync changed the FTM2014 file and needed to be resynced.

Russ

Is there an advantage to working in FTM and updating to Ancestry rather than the other way around?

Depends on what works for you.

As I said, I work in FTM2014 and update the AMT.

But I have been doing this for a couple of days now, actually a couple of years. So, that is what has worked for me.

Russ

GRRRRR, the sync error has reappeared. I made a change in AMT (added a story and web link) and now my FTM tree won't sync. It has the date issue that you mentioned in your FTM blog. I tried your solution (new tree, added death in AMT, and synced). Worked perfectly. Went to my FTM tree, tried to sync and got the sync error message again.

Sigh, guess I have to wait for the patch from Ancestry. :-(

Did you Compact your file when you reopened it?

I think the "patch" will be on the Web End, not within FTM2014.
