Hi Brenda,

As you have already discovered, the Mallet family origins go back a very long way, particularly in East Anglia. The Malets were Norman Barons who had estates in Lincolnshire prior to the Conquest. Following the Norman victory, Sir William Malet was granted 227 manors across England, most of these in Suffolk and Norfolk, and his brother Durand kept the estate at Irby in Lincolnshire. Durand's descendants settled in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Buckinghamshire.

In answer to your question, your family could be from either one of these lines and they spread over a wide area in East Anglia. Have you tried Genes Reunited yet?

Hello Richard

Thank you very much for your reply. Most enlightening & very interesting. Is that Irby in the Marsh or Irby Upon Humber? Yes, I'm on GenesReunited but found no one else connected to my family so far, apart from one 17thC descendant.

Thanks to you I now know where they came from originally, and so have only 600 years to research to fill in the gap between Durand and my John. Should be easy!
