Amended: Does anybody know how I can find out more about the Bible Christians? The whereabouts of any surviving records, that sort of thing? Some of my Hill ancestors from Throwleigh, Devon were devout Bible Christians and attended Providence Chapel .

The standard work on this offshoot of the Methodist Church by F W Bourne has recently been reprinted by Tentmaker Publications. There are also three good books by Sher Leetooze about the movement, largely in Canada
Some copies of the Bible Christian Magazine are available at

they are full of biographical information, all they need is someone to index them!
Many emigrants from North Devon and beyond were Bible Christians - as those who heard my recent talk at Devon Family History Society Summer Special will have heard.

Thank you so much Janet, I'll look at these sites over the next few days. I didn't expect a response so quickly :o)
Hi Brenda

Below are two Websites which should give you more information about Bible Christians :

http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~biblechristian/inde...

http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/Shebbear/BibleChristians/

Hope it helps.

Thank you for your help Hester.
Dear Brenda:

Below is an URL for John Ryland's Manchester Library.
If your ancestor died in Service he/she will be listed there.
I was able to get the obituary for my Great Uncle Albert J. Conibear. I wrote
for it.

Elsie Person,
Thank you for your help Mary and Elsie. What lovely, helpful people you all are :o)
I'm confused about one thing here. I wasn't aware that there was a Bible Christian chapel in Chittlehamholt. There is one in Chittlehampton. The chapel in Chittlehamholt is a Gospel Hall. Have I got this correct? Is there another chapel in Chittlehamholt I was unaware of?
Aah, the perils of relying on one's memory Roger! You're right, after checking my records I see that the Bible Christians in my tree attended Providence Chapel near Throwleigh. The chapel goers in Chittlehamholt were 'Independents". My mother married in the Methodist Chapel in Chagford and I was christened into a Methodist church too. Mum always just refers to "Chapel" and "Chapel goers", so I was a bit confused too :o)
I now live in NZ, but had a trip to the UK for Mum's 80th at Easter. My husband and I visited Chittlehamholt chapel and took photos of my great grandparent's graves, but Mum only told me other ancestors are burried at the CoE church after we had got back to Bristol! So I'll have to visit the church on another trip!
Chittlehamholt is only just up the road from me, so if you have any particular names you're interested in I can drop in and search for you. Not Clark or Nott by any chance? It's an unusual church as it has no tower - unusual for this area.
I'm not familiar with Throwleigh or Chagford as that's a bit further south, but might pop in there some time as well.
That's a very kind offer Roger, one I'll take up if you don't mind!
I don't have any connections to the Nott or Clark families, as far as I know, but I'll check my tree this evening. Direct ancestors from my mother's mother's family who might be found at Chittlehamholt church are William BEER c1813 to 16-11-1887 and his wife Sarah 1803 to 3-1-1886 (they lived at Deason, Warkleigh) and Robert MARTIN 1809 to 21-3-1885 and his wife Elizabeth1810 to 12-3-1888 who lived in Chittlehamholt. Robert's son George MARTIN and his wife farmed at Drakes Farm, Chittlehamholt and they are buried in the Chapel graveyard. I have photos of their graves along with later generations of BEERS also at the chapel.
I don't know when we will be back in the UK again, we'll need to win the lottery before we can afford it I reckon :o) Brenda
Another ancestor who may be buried at Chittlehamholt church are Hugh Arscott/Alscott who died 28-6-1878 aged 70yrs. His wife Mary Arscott, who died 10/03/1881 aged 86yrs at the 'Village' Chittlehampton, so may be she's buried there?
I've just noticed I made a typo when typing Elizabeth Martin's death date, the year should be 1858 not 88, she was 47 years old.
Thank you once again for your kind offer, please don't go out of your way, just whenever it suits you.:o)
