CORRECTION! I mentioned in a prior post that the South Carolina College hired a slave named Jack from Capt. John. Bostick. I have found this to be untrue. Jack was owned by the Manumitted JAMES BOSTICK that Hazel found in the archives. James, later, sold Jack to the college.
Hi! I am trying to make a coreection and have been unable to do so. I think I deleted one of my comments by mistake. I had said John Bostick has a nic name of Jack and this is not proven and probably untrue.
Hi Beazley! Is this JAMES ADAMS of the Congaree the same ADAMS in your family research? Interesting!
I have read that the run away slaves would hide in the Congaree and lived on the islands. I don't see these islands today when I look at various maps and photos, but perhaps they are there. I would love to know more about this.
lol that's a fact. I found that off of a congaree state park history site. that's the only thing that was said about him though.
Hi Beazley! Where did you find this so I can read more about it!
I think slave labor built most of Columbia and everything else in SC!
1839-41 | James Adams and others use slave labor to begin construction of dikes at NW and SW boundaries of the Congaree floodplain |

I saw someone mention that Grandma Angeline's father was frombaly a white governor or something. The dates just don't add up. on census records her father James Adams was born in 1797. My ancestor (angeline's son James) was named after him. Her death record states that he was born in beaufort Sc. there is a james Adams who has a free colored person living in his household on the 1840 richland county census. Gov James H Adams was living in a different household on this same census. If he was white and his wife was NA then I think that this other James would probably be them and not the governor.
