Welcome to the Douglas Genealogy Group

The first Douglas to stride across the stage of Scottish history was Sir William Douglas who fought and died for William Wallace. His son, Sir James Douglas was a supporter and lifelong friend of Robert the Bruce. "Good Sir James" died taking Bruce's heart on a crusade to the Holy Land. The 2nd Earl of Douglas died at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388 as his army defeated an English force led by Prince Henry "Hotspur". In 1402 the 4th Earl was defeated by the same Henry Hotspur at the Battle of Homildon Hill.

Few of their successors died in their beds! The Douglas Archives charts the history of this famous family, both in its native Scotland, and as family members spread across the world.

In this networking area, we hope that all those with Douglas connections will feel able to contribute and debate their Douglas heritage by providing lnks to their own family history websites, groups or 'My Page's.

To promote your group, or your own website, use the Discussion Forum. Just write up a wee description of what your site or group is all about, and make sure that you put in a link to your page.

The contents of the Douglas Archives have probably more than doubled since this tread began.

If you have not looked for a while, maybe now would be a good time to see if there is more on your Douglas branch.

Plans for the Douglas Clan Gathering are progressing well.
I have a meeting at Drumlanrig Castle next week to arrange for a visit there.

Should there be a Clan Douglas Gathering in 2014?

The EventScotland announcement of the funding opportunities to create Scotland's Homecoming celebrations in 2014 is an opportunity for Clan Douglas to have a Scottish Gathering - the first ever.

It might also be an opportunity to launch a Clan Douglas Heritage Trust, to enable us to promote and advance the education of the public in the history, traditions and music of the Clan Douglas. It would seek to preserve and make widely known the enormous contribution that members of the Clan Douglas have made, and are still making, in politics, medicine, literature, music, sport, exploration and other forms of scientific endeavour, military campaigns and many other fields. It would ensure that their achievements are not forgotten, not only through the printed word but also through the preservation of manuscripts, artefacts, buildings and other tangible links. It also promotes the continuing contribution of Douglases in these areas.

Please let me know your views on a Clan Douglas Gathering, and what you would like to see happening at such an event. http://douglashistory.ning.com/group/clan-douglas-gathering-2014

My page is easily accessable by clicking my image. That is probably the best place to leave me a mesage, or to see what the latest activity is.

Invite me as a friend, and that will also enable us to share developments in Douglas ancestral research.
